OVERVIEW

About United Church of Canada:

United Church of Canada is a 2-star charity. It has large funding reserves and poor reporting of its results for donors. It is financially transparent and has overhead spending within Ci's reasonable range.

Founded in 1925, the United Church of Canada (UCC) is the largest Protestant denomination in Canada. UCC aims to offer resources of faith, gather people into congregations for the public worship of God, and promote justice worldwide. The Church reports that it ministers to over two million people in 3,000 congregations.

UCC runs community programs and events in Canada to promote faith. This includes children and youth programs like camps and mission projects, as well as broader community events, such as webinars, conferences, workshops, and seminars. The Church also runs eight theological schools in Canada that offer educational and training opportunities for people of all ages.

Through mission and service work, UCC partners with local organizations, including congregations, schools, and other charities, to meet the needs of vulnerable people. In Canada, the work of mission and service partners includes serving basic needs of the poor and providing chaplaincy in schools, hospitals, and summer camps. UCC is committed to being open and accessible, opposing discrimination on any basis, including gender and gender identity, sexuality, and disability.

International mission and service grants address issues outside of Canada. Partner organizations work to provide education for children and adults, increase access to sustainable food sources, and build and sustain clean water sources. In 2022, UCC had 72 partners in 21 countries. Advocacy work focuses on the human rights of women and Indigenous peoples, peacebuilding, and protecting communities from damaging environmental conditions. In 2022, UCC allocated a portion of international mission and service grants to covid-19 relief and vaccination, as well as support for people affected by the war in Ukraine.

Results and Impact

United Church of Canada reports that it helps provide necessities to people in need through its international mission and service partners. In 2020, UCC’s partner, Asian Muslim Action Network, provided 780 food packages to displaced families in Afghanistan, benefiting over 3,000 people. In 2022, UCC partnered with Hungarian Interchurch Aid to supply Ukrainian refugee centres with food, water, hygiene products, and household appliances.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of United Church of Canada's results and impact. This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).

Finances

Charity Intelligence has consolidated the audited financial statements of United Church of Canada and United Church of Canada Foundation.

United Church of Canada is a Major 100 charity, one of Canada’s largest charities in terms of donations. It received $49.3m in donations in F2021. Combined administrative and fundraising costs are 9% of revenues (less investment income). This means total overhead spending is 9%. For every dollar donated, 91 cents go to the cause, which is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

UCC has $222.2m in funding reserves, once $344k in debt is accounted for. The Church could cover 451% or four years and six months of its annual program costs with reserves.

UCC's financial statements note that UCC administers KAIROS, a non-for-profit ecumenical organization that aims to address ecological justice and human rights issues. KAIROS is a program of UCC, steered by a committee of ten member churches and church related organizations. UCC provides administrative, financial, and personnel services on behalf of the other members. As of 2016, UCC has control over strategic, operating, investing, and financing policies of KAIROS.

This charity profile is an update that has been sent to United Church of Canada for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
