About Ve'ahavta:

Ve'ahavta is a 4-star, financially transparent charity. Its results reporting score is B, which is average. Its overhead spending is within Ci’s reasonable range. Its reserve funds can cover two years and eleven months of annual program costs. 

Founded in 1996, Ve'ahavta: The Canadian Jewish Humanitarian & Relief Committee (Ve'ahavta) is a Toronto-based Jewish charity that works against homelessness. It reports that homelessness in Toronto has doubled since 2013. The city does not have enough shelter beds to meet the need. The charity serves individuals of all faiths and backgrounds. 

Ve'ahavta operates three main programs: Essential Skills, Emergency Services, and Paid Internship Positions. 

Essential Skills were 38% of program spending in F2023. It operates two free, nine-week digital programs to build digital literacy, career management, and personal development. One of these programs is specifically designed for individuals who identify as women. In F2023, Ve'ahavta reported 274 program graduates. 

Emergency Services were 36% of program spending in F2023. It operates an outreach van that distributes supplies in downtown Toronto and Scarborough. It also provides an online program to teach life skills. In F2023, the van made 61,658 service visits. Across these visits, it distributed:  

  • 70,329 meals,  
  • 61,315 pieces of clothing,  
  • 24,212 hygiene supplies,  
  • 1,240 sleeping bags, and  
  • 5,448 harm reduction kits. 

Paid Internship Positions were 26% of program spending in F2023. It provides paid work experience to those unemployed or experiencing poverty. The positions are in warehouse management and food service. Participants train for four months, and then some are selected to fill paid positions.

Ve'ahavta reported that 22% of its Essential Skills program graduates became employed either full- or part-time within 6 months.
