About Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation:
Founded in 1984, Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation (RAHF) works to improve the health of people in Alberta by raising money for Royal Alexandra Hospital. The foundation supports education, research, technology purchases, and capital projects in many of the hospital’s departments. The hospital sees hundreds of thousands of patients every year and in F2017 performed 44,165 surgeries, the most of any hospital in Alberta.
In F2017, RAHF distributed $6.3m to healthcare programs with the largest grant received by Lois Hole Hospital for Women/Women’s Health, followed by General Purpose, Men’s Health, and Inner City Health & Wellness. Lois Hole is the only dedicated women’s hospital in Alberta. The 18 women’s doctors and 15 specialists performed thousands of procedures last year including the births of 7,500 babies. Within the Inner City program, RAHF donated $62k to a winter warming bus which offers hot soup, winter clothes, and a warm space for homeless people in Edmonton.
The Diagnostic Imaging department performs more than 200,000 procedures every year including x-rays, ultrasounds, and MRIs. Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation is fundraising to purchase a PET/CT scanner. This machine would diagnose and treat early-stage diseases, especially cancer.
Results and Impact: RAHF previously purchased a da Vinci Robotic Surgical System for operations involving women’s cancers. The minimally invasive and precise surgeries have reduced pain, bleeding, hospital stay lengths, and recovery times for patients.
Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation is categorized as a Large charity with donations of $5.0m in F2018. RAHF received $4.0m in net revenue from lotteries, representing 37% of total revenue. Administrative costs are 10% of revenues and fundraising costs are 41% of donations. For each $1 donated, 49 cents go to the cause, falling below Ci’s reasonable range. RAHF has $43.6m in funding reserves, of which $22.6m is donor-endowed. Excluding donor-endowed funds, reserves could cover program costs for over 4 years.
