OVERVIEW

About Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada:

Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada is a 3-star charity with an above average results reporting grade of A. For every dollar donated, 84 cents are available to go towards the cause. Its reserve funds can cover four years and three months of annual program costs.

Founded in 1982, Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada (RMHC Canada) is the national foundation of support for 12 RMHC Regional Chapters across Canada. Regional Chapters serve families with sick children who must travel for medical treatment. In Canada, 65% of families live outside a city with a children’s hospital, and four out of five families need a place close to the hospital to stay. Due to capacity problems, RMHC Canada turns away 3,000 families in an average year. RMHC Canada hopes that by 2028 it will increase national support capacity from 522 bedrooms to 893 bedrooms. RMHC Canada grants money to the 12 Regional Chapters to support the operation of 16 RMHC Houses and 18 RMHC Family Rooms. In 2023, the charity spent $15.0m on grants.

Most of the granted money gets spent on the various RMHC Houses. RMHC Houses provide private family bedrooms, fully equipped kitchens, laundry facilities, and playrooms. The Houses also offer support services and recreational activities. There are 16 Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada. In 2023, RMHC Canada states these Houses served 18,493 families and provided 434,680 meals and 254 family support programs. In 2023, there were 158,248 overnight stays making the average length of stay 16 nights. 22% of the families staying at RMHC Houses have neonatal diagnoses, 14% have cardiology diagnoses, and 12% have oncology diagnoses.

The rest of the money goes towards RMHC Family Rooms. Family Rooms give families a calm, medical-free space within hospital walls. They include kitchens, laundry facilities, showers, lounge areas, and in some cases private sleeping rooms. There are 18 Family Rooms in hospitals across Canada.

95% of families said RMHC improved their mental and emotional wellbeing.

97% of families said RMHC improved their ability to be involved in their child’s care.

97% of families said RMHC allowed them to rest and maintain physical well-being.

97% of families said RMHC eased their financial burden.

In 2023, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) conducted an economic impact study. The report stated that the 16 Ronald McDonald houses across Canada saved Canadian families a total of $57.0m in out-of-pocket expenses. Out-of-pocket expenses include lodging, food, and other essentials. The two regions that saved Canadian families the most amount of money were Ontario and Alberta, saving $22.9m and $8.5m respectively.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a full representation of RMHC Canada’s results and impact. Charity Intelligence has given Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada a Fair impact rating for demonstrated impact per dollar.
