A Charity Intelligence 2023 Top 100 Rated Charity

Founded in 1988, Food for the Hungry Canada (FH Canada or FHC) is a Christian charity that aims to end poverty. In F2023, FH Canada worked directly with 120 low-income communities across Bangladesh, Burundi, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Rwanda, and Uganda to help them become self-sufficient, and live sustainably. In each country, its projects focus on health, education, livelihoods, and leadership. FH Canada reports that 96% of program costs were spent on international programs, 1% on Canadian programs, and 3% on public awareness and education in F2023. It did not provide a spending breakdown within its international programs. 

In F2023, FHC’s Bangladesh programs supported 9,092 community members in five communities. In F2023, FHC established four new preschools, and equipped 11 preschools with mats, baskets, coloured pencils, chalkboards, and learning materials for each student. The charity also installed four overhead water tanks and established three breastfeeding areas.

In F2023, the Burundi programs supported 6,144 community members in 20 communities. In F2023, FHC constructed two classrooms, distributed 419 desks to seven schools, and constructed ten latrines at one school. The charity also delivered 926 kg of maize seed and 200 kg of bean seed to 635 farmers.

The Cambodia programs supported 28,141 community members in 35 communities in F2023. FHC delivered playground equipment to five primary schools and gave library materials to 5,456 children from 17 primary schools. The charity gave hygiene kits to 475 families and trained 165 community members on business management and financial literacy.

The Ethiopia programs supported 28,564 community members in nine communities. In F2023, FHC installed 31 new water points, benefitting 1,550 households. The charity also constructed four new classrooms and distributed 360 books to nine primary schools.

The Guatemala programs supported 3,203 community members in 12 communities. In F2023, FH Canada distributed 2,019 school supplies kits to students and delivered 370 chickens to families.

The Rwanda programs supported 15,652 community members in four communities. In F2023, FH Canada provided 58,652 tree seedlings to community members and distributed 1,847 corrugated sheets to 120 vulnerable households with damaged roofs.

The Uganda programs supported 13,848 community members in seven communities. In F2023, FH Canada distributed 1,000 story books to seven schools and contributed 780 kg of beans and maize seeds to school gardens to feed 5,000 children. The charity also screened 1,193 people for malnutrition and built five latrines for girls at a primary school.

In F2023, Food for the Hungry Canada had donations of $8.1m and donated goods valued at $5.4m that were used in programs.

Administrative costs are 8% of revenues (less investment income) and fundraising costs are 22% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 31%, which is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. 

FH Canada has $1.3m in reserve funds. These reserve funds are the charity’s cash and investments. The charity has 3 months of annual program costs covered by its current reserves. This shows a need for funding.

In F2023, Food for the Hungry Canada paid external fundraisers $579k. These external fundraisers raised $3.9m in donations. This means it costs FH Canada $0.15 to raise $1 using external fundraisers.
