About Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation:
Founded in 1977, Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation (TGWHF) funds research, patient care, and education at Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, and the Michener Institute of Education at University Health Network (UHN). To date, the foundation has granted $1.2b to the hospitals ($966m to research, $175m to patient care, and $68m to education), of which $81m came in F2018. No further breakdown was provided for F2018.
Within its granting activities, the foundation focuses on multiple areas: arthritis, neurology, diabetes, education, emergency care, stem cell, transplants, lung health, vision, and development of new operating rooms. The foundation reports that the Toronto General Hospital is home to the largest transplant program in North America. Annually, the hospital’s Edmond J. Safra Program in Parkinson’s Disease receives more than 8,000 patients, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre performs more than 10,000 procedures, and the Glaucoma clinic has 10,000 patient visits. Lastly, UHN currently has 90 research chairs being supported by the foundation.

Ci chose to highlight the following results:
Since the inception of the foundation, researchers it supports have discovered two osteoarthritis blood makers that help with the early diagnosis of arthritis, implanted more than 200 mechanical hearts into patients, and developed the first biological pacemaker for heart rhythm. Additionally, researchers have developed Ex Vivo technology, which has increased lung transplants by 70% in five years.

Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation is a Major 100 charity with donations and special events revenues of $110m in F2018. Its administrative and fundraising costs were 16% of revenues.
