OVERVIEW
About RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs):
RAVEN is a 4-star rated charity with an above-average results reporting score. It is financially transparent and has overhead costs within Ci’s reasonable range.
Founded in 2006, RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs) raises funds to help Indigenous people defend their legal rights and fight for climate protection. Through its campaigns, RAVEN aims to establish environmental justice for all. The charity’s main office is in Victoria, British Columbia.
RAVEN enters into partnership agreements with Indigenous Nations, after which it collaborates with the Nation to run a fundraising campaign. As part of the campaign, the charity engages in public education, events, and partnerships with local organisations and businesses. The money raised is held in a trust and disbursed to law firms at the discretion of the Indigenous Nation partners.
In F2021, RAVEN engaged in four new campaigns. The charity also hosted six new webinars and developed its Home on Native Land project, a public education project with ten online learning modules.

Results and Impact
Beaver Lake Cree Nation has filed a constitutional challenge against industrial development and tar sands mines in its territory. They are the first community to challenge the environmental, social, and cultural impacts of industrial development. RAVEN helped Beaver Lake Cree Nation to apply for Advance Costs. Alberta appealed the Advance Cost ruling, but the Nation fought the appeal to the Supreme Court. In 2022, the victory at the Supreme Court level helped enshrine the right to justice for all Nations. This case is still ongoing.
RAVEN also supported four Indigenous groups in a court case against a proposed Petronas LNG facility on Lelu Island that would have negatively affected the wild salmon in the region. The court case ended in victory for the Indigenous Nations and a cancellation of the proposal.
In 2017, the Supreme Court upheld the plan to protect the majority of the Peel Watershed region in northern Yukon. RAVEN helped fund the final leg of this court case.
While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of RAVEN’s results and impact. This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).
