OVERVIEW
About Niagara Health Foundation:
Niagara Health Foundation is a 2-star charity with a results reporting grade of C- which is below average. For every dollar donated, 84 cents are available to go to the cause. The charity can cover eight years and five months of annual program costs with its current reserve funds.
Founded in 1991, Niagara Health Foundation (NHF) raises funds for medical equipment, capital projects, patient care, education, and research at Niagara Health’s hospitals. Niagara Health oversees five hospital sites in St. Catharines, Welland, Niagara Falls, Fort Erie, and Port Colborne. The five hospital sites serve over 480,000 residents in the Niagara area. In fiscal 2023 (year ended May), NHF reports that the hospitals received 185,061 emergency care patients. This is a 7% increase from the 172,174 visits in F2022. In F2023, NHF granted $4.6m to Niagara Health. The charity does not provide a spending breakdown of the grants, but based on its website and impact report, Ci determined the grants went towards equipment, capital projects, patient care, and research.
Some of the NHF grants went towards buying medical equipment for the hospitals. In F2023, NHF reports purchasing nine transportation ventilators, four breast boards, three new washer-disinfectors, one automated chemistry analyzer, and two emergency ultrasound machines. All of these purchases totalled to $302.2k. In F2023, NHF also reported completing 21,027 MRI scans, and 72,171 ultrasounds.
Another portion of NHF’s grants goes towards capital projects, including maintenance, upgrades, and purchases of new facilities. In July, 2023, NHF began construction for the South Niagara Hospital Project. The charity hopes construction will be completed in five years. The building will have 469 beds and 12 additional hemodialysis stations. It will accommodate 20,000 more emergency visits and see a 74% increase in MRI diagnostic capability.
NHF supports patient care at Niagara Health’s hospitals. In F2023, NHF reports that doctors performed 2,331 heart investigation procedures, 1,468 joint replacements, and delivered 3,343 babies. NHF also breaks down the patients it cares for. In F2023, NHF had 3,189 intensive care patients, 25,209 mental health patients, 1,906 children’s care patients, and 75,486 cancer care patients.
NHF also funds research at Niagara Health’s hospitals. Some of the research focuses are Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Oncology, Pediatrics and Surgery. Niagara Health Foundation does not report specific details on this research.
