OVERVIEW
About Burnaby Hospital Foundation:
Burnaby Hospital Foundation is a 3-star charity. It has an A- results reporting grade, which is above average. For every dollar donated, 80 cents are available to go to the cause, which is within Ci's reasonable range; however, the charity has enough cash and investments to cover over twelve years of annual program costs.
Founded in 1982, Burnaby Hospital Foundation (BHF) is the fundraising organization for Burnaby Hospital (BH). BHF bridges the gap between what the government provides BH and what the community needs. The charity states that BH’s emergency department is the second largest in the Fraser Health Authority. Burnaby Hospital's emergency department sees 83,00 patients in an area designed to support 54,000. Burnaby Hospital Foundation also supports St. Michael’s Centre and New Canadian Clinic. The charity did not disclose how much these clinics received in F2022.
In F2022, BHF spent $1.6m in grants toward Burnaby Hospital to purchase 12 pieces of equipment. The charity reports BH sees on average 200,000 patients each year. BHF states that its hospital performs 15,000 surgeries and minor procedures each year. BH’s Multiple Sclerosis Clinic has provided care to more than 4,000 patients since its founding in 2004.
Burnaby Hospital Foundation is raising funds to redevelop Burnaby Hospital. The charity reports the expansion is due to the growing demand of Burnaby Hospital. BHF states that Burnaby Hospital’s demand has doubled in the past ten years and will grow by 35% in the upcoming 15 years. The charity reports the hospital campus will have expanded medical services, two new patient care towers, and a cancer treatment centre upon completion. The redevelopment will be completed in two phases. BHF reports it raised $30m in under three years to complete phase one. Construction for the redevelopment began in F2022.

BHF ran a 50/50 lottery in F2022, earning $12k after expenses. BHF’s administrative costs are 13% of revenue (excluding investment income) and its fundraising costs are 7% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 20%. For every dollar donated to the charity, 80 cents are available to go to the cause, which is within Ci’s reasonable range.
Burnaby Hospital Foundation has $20.1m in reserve funds. Of which $112k is donor endowed. BHF notes in its financial statements that it has $13.8m in externally restricted specified funds for capital purposes but provides no information on funds designated for the hospital redevelopment project, thus these funds are included in reserve funds. Excluding donor-endowed funds the charity can cover 1218%, or twelve years and two months of its annual program costs. This is an 86% increase compared to F2021 where the charity’s program cost coverage was 651%.
