Founded in 1973, Amref Health Africa in Canada (Amref Canada) is an international aid charity that helps vulnerable communities access quality health care. The charity is the Canadian arm of Amref Health Africa Global. Alongside the government and community partners, Amref Canada operates projects to address critical health needs of its target communities. The charity prioritizes women, children, and adolescents and focuses on sexual health and rights, health worker training, sanitation and hygiene, medical outreach, and disease prevention. Amref Canada reported that Africa accounts for 200,000 of the 289,000 women and teenage girls who die every year of pregnancy or childbirth. The charity stated that countries in sub-Saharan Africa have an average of 1.1 health workers per 1,000 people compared to the recommended minimum of 2.3 per 1,000.
In 2023, the charity reported that it had 193 programs in 25 countries, reaching 16.6 million people. Amref Canada stated that 505,655 girls, boys, and young people enrolled in its comprehensive sexual health and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education in Uganda. The charity stated that it reached 8,244 people through its monthly mobile clinics in Kenya and reached 109,579 people with access to nutrition services and clean water in Ethiopia.
The charity worked with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Zambia to implement a sustainable blended learning program to upskill over 1,200 enrolled nurses to Diploma nurses. As of 2023, 723 nurses were enrolled with the goal of 2,000 nurse-midwives upgraded to Diploma level by the end of 2024.

Results and Impact
The Girl Generation, Amref Canada’s movement to end Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C), resulted in a 13% increase in girls and boys in school health clubs showing a more positive knowledge that supports ending FGM/C. The charity also reported a 16% increase in communities showing more egalitarian beliefs and a 10% increase in students showing positive changes and agency around FGM/C after taking part in the youth engagement activities.
Amref International University (AMIU) offers programs in nursing, midwifery, public health, and community health to address the shortage of well-trained health workers. In Kenya, AMIU’s introduction of trained midwives increased prenatal consultation at one facility from 26 to 165. In Ethiopia, the modern contraceptive prevalence rate among married women rose by 33.3%. In Kenya’s Kibera slum, trained workers achieved a 97% viral suppression rate among HIV-positive clients.
