OVERVIEW
About Ratanak International:
Ratanak International is a two-star charity with reasonable overhead spending and an average results reporting grade. The charity has funding reserves that can cover less than two years of program costs and is not financially transparent.
Founded in 1989, Ratanak International (RTI) is a charity that works to empower people experiencing exploitation in Cambodia. RTI wants to create a world where everyone can be free and live in dignity. The charity reports that human trafficking is prevalent in Cambodia due to high levels of poverty and a lack of social services since the rule of the Khmer Rouge. RTI has affiliated charities in the UK and Australia that contribute to its programs in Cambodia. Ratanak International’s charitable programs are Ratanak Achievement, Community Hero, and Empowerment Training. In F2021, the charity spent $1.2m on its programs.
The Ratanak Achievement program is a reintegration program that provides transitional services to young women who are survivors of violence or labour exploitation. RTI helps women return home to Cambodia and offers them job training and life skills training. Its Men’s Achievement program provides similar services to men who have been exploited in human trafficking situations. In F2021, 312 trafficking survivors received care through this program. The charity also helped draft a set of national guidelines on repatriation of trafficking victims for the Cambodian government.
The Community Hero program involves abuse prevention and awareness sessions in high-risk communities. The educational sessions focus on the issues of human trafficking, sexual abuse, illegal migration, and how to protect children from abuse. In F2021, 300 family leaders received trafficking prevention training.
The Empowerment Training project addresses the poor working conditions experienced by women at Karaoke Bars and Beer Gardens in Phnom Penh. The project provides classes to women on strategies to avoid exploitation at work. In F2021, 44 women in exploitative job situations completed the empowerment training course.
