Founded in 2006, Rainbow Railroad helps at-risk LGBTQI+ people get to safety. Rainbow Railroad expects to receive 10,000 requests for help from LGBTQI+ people by the end of 2023. The charity aims to relocate these people to safer countries. Since its founding, the charity has helped over 1,470 people find safety. Rainbow Railroad's office is in Toronto. The charity also has an affiliate in the US, Rainbow Railroad USA. The two charities work together and act under the same management. While the Canadian and US charities report separate financial statements, they do not report their activities separately.
Rainbow Railroad helps LGBTQI+ individuals by responding to requests for help made on the charity's website. Emergency Travel Support is Rainbow Railroad's core program. Finances
The following financial analysis relates to F2021, the most recent set of audited financial statements available on Rainbow Railroad's website at the time of this profile update.
Rainbow Railroad received $4.3m in donations and special event revenues in F2021. Administrative costs are 6% of revenues (less investment income), and fundraising costs are 19% of donations and special events revenues. This results in total overhead spending of 24%. For every dollar donated, 76 cents go to the cause, which is within Ci's reasonable range for overhead spending.
Rainbow Railroad has $982k in reserve funds (cash and investments) once $30k of interest-bearing debt is accounted for. The charity can cover 28% or three months of its annual program costs with reserves, indicating a need for funding.
Rainbow Railroad receives money from Rainbow Railroad US, an affiliated entity. This support from Rainbow Railroad US is removed from Canadian donations and shown as international revenues. This adjustment affects Ci's calculation of Rainbow Railroad's fundraising costs and cents to the cause ratios.
