Finances

Rainbow Railroad’s audited financial statements follow activity-based costing, which is a best practice. This means it clearly discloses program, administrative, and fundraising costs.

In 2025, the charity received $6.7m in Canadian donations and special events revenue, representing 61% of its total revenue. It also received $2.0m in government funding (19% of revenue) and $1.6m in international donations (14% of revenue)

Rainbow Railroad spent $6.9m on its programs in 2025, which was 67% of revenue (excluding donated goods).

Fundraising costs were $1.6m, which was 24% of donations, and administrative costs were $788k, which was 7% of revenue (excluding investment income). Total overhead was 31%, meaning that for every dollar donated, 69 cents are available to go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range.

At the end of 2025, Rainbow Railroad had $992k in reserve funds (cash and investments). These reserves could cover its annual program costs for just under two months, which is within Ci’s reasonable range.

Rainbow Railroad receives money from Rainbow Railroad US, an affiliated entity. This support from Rainbow Railroad US is removed from Canadian donations and shown as international donations. This adjustment affects Ci's calculation of Rainbow Railroad's fundraising costs and cents to the cause ratios.

This charity report is an update that was sent to Rainbow Railroad for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
