About Kidney Foundation of Canada:
Founded in 1964, Kidney Foundation of Canada (KFOC) works to eliminate the burden of kidney disease for patients and their families. The charity supports patients through funding research, educating patients, advocating for better healthcare, and increasing public awareness of kidney disease. KFOC reports that more than 40,000 Canadians are currently being treated for kidney failure and 3,400 people are waiting for a kidney transplant with a median wait time of 4 years. In F2018, Kidney Foundation of Canada allocated 38% of its program spending to research, 28% to patient services, 26% to public education services and communication, and 8% to organ donations.
KFOC’s research granting program funds kidney-disease-related research across Canada. In F2018, the charity distributed $4.1 million in grants of which 46% went to biomedical research, 25% went to the Krescent research program, 21% went to partnerships, and 8% went to allied health awards. In total, KFOC funded 369 projects.
The services and support program offer patients four services: information and referral, educational materials, short-term financial assistance, and peer support groups. In F2018, the charity gave out $177k in subsidies to 383 children allowing them to attend summer camp. It also provided $460k in short-term financial assistance to over 2,900 people.
Through the public education program, the foundation promotes activities that increase awareness of the importance of kidney disease and organ donation. In F2018, KFOC gave out 24,000 handbooks, 44,000 educational brochures, had over two million impressions across various forms of media, and 12 thousand direct engagements. The foundation helped 2,000 people access peer-to-peer support. Lastly, 146,000 people consulted the foundation's community kitchen page, which is a website where people share kidney-friendly recipes.
The charity reports that 78% of people waiting for an organ donation in Canada, in 2017, were waiting for a kidney. Through the organ donation program, the charity informs people about the prevalence and need for organ donations, specifically kidneys. This program encourages people to consider organ donation.
Results and Impact:
Ci chose to highlight the following outcomes from F2018.
KFOC funded a researcher named Christopher Kennedy whose findings revealed the reason why anti-inflammatory drugs caused damage to people’s kidney if already suffering from kidney disease. His research found that a specific receptor for a hormone controlling blood flow, reduces the amount delivered to the kidneys when anti-inflammatory drugs are taken. These findings were published in the journal Antioxidants and Redox Signaling.
With donations of $27.8m in F2018, Kidney Foundation of Canada is a Major 100, meaning it is one of Canada’s 100 largest charities in terms of donations. Administrative costs are 12% of revenues (excluding investment income) and fundraising costs are 44% of donations. For every dollar donated to the charity, 44 cents go to its programs. This is outside of Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. KFOC has funding reserves of $21m, of which $4.7m is donor-endowed. Excluding endowments, the charity’s reserves can cover annual program costs for 1.5 years.
KFOC reports having $3.1m in research commitments until F2021 and a minimum rental obligation of $1.8 million which is expected to be disbursed over the next 5 years.
