OVERVIEW

About Jewish General Hospital Foundation:

Jewish General Hospital Foundation is a three-star charity with an average results reporting grade. It is financially transparent and has reserve funds that can cover around 11 years of program costs.

Founded in 1969, Jewish General Hospital Foundation (JGHF) raises funds to support patient care and research at Jewish General Hospital. The Montreal-based hospital is an acute-care, teaching hospital associated with McGill University. In the 2022 Newsweek ranking of Canadian hospitals, Jewish General Hospital ranked 5th in Canada.

The Foundation provides Jewish General Hospital funds for three main programs:

Patient Care: Patient care received 58% of annual grants in F2022. In a typical year, Jewish General Hospital has 626 beds. It admits 25,000 patients and experiences over 67,000 emergency visits. Its Birthing Centre facilitates 4,500 births per year. It is a neonatal care center, treating one of every seven low-birth weight babies born in Quebec.

Research and Academic Enhancement: Research and Academic Enhancement was 23% of grants in F2022. JGHF funds over 220 research investigators. The Jewish General Hospital developed a covid-19 Biobank, which it reports to be the largest in Canada and one of the largest in the world. Since its founding in 2020, the Foundation reports that 32 projects have been pursued.

Capital Projects and Equipment: In F2022, grants for capital projects and equipment accounted for 17% of total grants. The funding is to build and renovate parts of the hospital as well as buy new pieces of equipment. In F2022, the Jewish General Hospital renovated its geriatric clinic. The Susan and Aron Lieberman Family Wellness in Aging Geriatric Centre now has ten examination rooms compared to four before the renovations. In recent years, there has been emphasis on acquiring surgical robots. As of F2022, the hospital has four armed robots to assist in surgeries. JGHF reports that the Da Vinci Robotic system is now used in 90% of gynecologic cancer operations.

The final 2% of grants was allocated to other organizations, primarily McGill University.

Results and Impact

The Jewish General Hospital Foundation reports about the Command Centre at the Hospital. The Centre uses real-time data about all activities across the healthcare network of which Jewish General Hospital is a part. Its purpose is to improve patient flow across the network.

JGHF reports that the length of hospital stays in wards such as surgery, psychiatry, geriatrics, and rehab have dropped by two days. Furthermore, the delays of admissions from the emergency department to a ward in the hospital have decreased from 31.8 hours to 23.8 hours. The number of hospitalized patients awaiting transfer to a long-term hospice, rehabilitations centers or home care has gone down from an average of 67 patients to 43. The number of psychiatric patients waiting for admittance has dropped from an average of 15-18 each day, to 5-10 per day.

JGHF reports that researchers at the Hospital have published papers in more than a dozen academic journals. These include Nature, Nature Medicine, and Nature Genetics.

Charity Intelligence highlights these key results. They may not be a complete representation of JGHF's results. Charity Intelligence has not assessed impact on JGHF. This shows as n/r, meaning not rated.
