About Meeting House:

Founded in 1985 as Upper Oaks Community Church, The Meeting House Church Family (MHCF) is a Christian church. MHCF is part of Be in Christ Church of Canada, a branch of the international Brethren in Christ or BIC Churches. MHCF works to follow “Jesus’ irreligious message,” without the rules and rituals it attributes to organized religions. The main facility is in Oakville and there are 18 additional locations in Ontario.

Sermons delivered in Oakville are videotaped and edited before being made available to the regional sites. On Sunday mornings, the regional sites show a recently taped sermon at a commercial movie theatre. Children and adult church members are then separated into smaller groups to receive age-appropriate teachings delivered by pastors and volunteers.

Sunday teachings are further discussed by MHCF followers in meetings called Home Church. These meetings are hosted in followers’ homes and may be for adults only or provide care for children. Members are welcome to attend any of the numerous Home Church groups listed on the MHCF website.

MHCF operates a compassion fund which grants money to local and global charities working for peace, dealing with poverty, and spreading Christian messages. In F2018, MHCF granted $1.2 million to 54 registered Canadian charities. The largest amounts granted were: $486k to Be in Christ Church of Canada, $319 to Mennonite Central Committee Ontario, and $100k to World Vision Canada.

Results and Impact

In F2018, The Meeting House Church Family reports baptizing over 30 leaders and students in Ontario. As with other BIC Churches, individuals baptized by MHCF are fully submerged to represent a believer’s submission to Jesus Christ.

The Meeting House Church Family is a large charity, with donations of $10.8m in F2018. Fundraising and administrative costs are 9% of revenues. For every $1 donated, 91 cents go to the cause, which is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

MHCF has $3.4m in funding reserves but holds $4.6m in interest-bearing debts. At maturity in May 2019 and June 2019, the debts are intended to be refinanced. This debt produces a negative cost coverage ratio. Excluding interest-bearing debts, MHCF could cover program costs for four months using funding reserves.

This charity report is a new profile that has been sent to The Meeting House Church Family for review.
