About Quest Food Exchange:

Founded in 1992, Quest Outreach Society (Quest) began when a youth group started delivering sandwiches to homeless people in downtown Vancouver. In 2006, Quest officially rebranded and changed its name to Quest Food Exchange. Quest aims to “reduce hunger with dignity, build community and foster sustainability”. It works in collaboration with food suppliers who donate their surplus food to provide affordable food to individuals facing food insecurity in British Columbia. The charity takes an environmentally conscious approach to food redistribution to ensure excess food is allocated efficiently to those in need. Quest is based out of Vancouver.

While not open to the general public, Quest Food Exchange gives individuals who are low-income, have a disability, or are on an old-age pension, the opportunity to choose food that suits their needs in a grocery market environment. In F2017, Quest reported having 245,105 client visits at its Not-for-Profit Grocery Markets. In January 2017, the charity opened its fifth Grocery Market location. It now has locations in Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby and North Vancouver. In F2017, Quest reports to also have provided 250 students in five inner-city schools in BC with healthy snacks during the school year.

Results and Impact: Quest Food Exchange reports as a result of its redistribution program, approximately 933 tonnes of surplus food were diverted from landfill sites in F2017. This also translates to saving approximately 46 tonnes of greenhouse gasses from entering the earth’s atmosphere in F2017.

Financial Review:

Quest Food Exchange is a Large charity which received monetary donations of $2.2m in F2016. Additionally, it collected donated food and equipment worth $8.3m in F2016. Administrative costs are less than 4% of total revenues and reported fundraising costs of only $23k are 1% of total donations. For every dollar donated to the charity, $0.95 goes towards its program, which falls just outside Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. Quest Food Exchange has total funding reserves of $597k. Excluding the cost of donated food and equipment, Quest Food Exchange’s funding reserves can cover program costs for just over 4 months, indicating a need for donations.
