About Université de Montréal:

Founded as the Université de Laval a Montréal in 1878, l’Université de Montréal (UdeM) is a public research university in Montreal, Québec. UdeM is comprised of three schools: l’Université de Montréal, HEC Montréal and l’École Polytechnique. UdeM offers 600 undergraduate and graduate programs in 14 faculties: Arts and Science, Dentistry, Education, Environmental Design, Kinesiology, Law, Medicine, Music, Optometry, Nursing, Public Health, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, and Continuing Education. The university currently has over 400,000 alumni worldwide.

Université de Montréal reports having 67,409 students in F2018 with 45,502 at l’Université de Montréal, 13,656 at HEC Montréal and 8,251 at Polytechnique Montréal. Undergraduate students make up 73% and graduate students make up 27% of the student body. The university was home to 10,000 international students in F2018, making it Canada’s most international university, according to the Times Higher Education ranking. UdeM had 2,400 professors and researchers, 2,600 lecturers, 500 adjunct professors, and 3,800 clinical professors in F2018. This results in a student to faculty (including only professors and researchers) ratio of 28:1.

Université de Montréal had 465 research units, 133 Canada Research Chairs, and one Canada 150 Research Chair in F2018. UdeM has two university-hospital research centres and works with 37 partner health institutions. The university also has an expansive library, with over three million books and documents.

Results and Impact

Université de Montréal ranks 37th in the world for the reputation of its graduates among employers, according to the Global University Employability Ranking. It is also 90th among the world’s top universities, according to the Times Higher Education ranking.

With over $500 million in research funding, UdeM reports that it ranks 3rd among the top universities in Canada, largely thanks to its high volume of research activities.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Université de Montréal’s results and impact.

Université de Montréal received total donations of $62.3m in F2018. Administrative costs are 6% of revenues (excluding investment income) and fundraising costs are 11% of donations. For every dollar donated, 83 cents go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. Net funding reserves of $220.2m can cover three months of annual program costs.
