About Université de Montréal:

Founded as the Université de Laval a Montréal in 1878, l’Université de Montréal (UdeM) is a public research university in Montreal, Québec. UdeM is comprised of three schools, l’Université de Montréal, HEC Montréal and l’École Polytechnique. The university was ranked 103rd best in the world and 4th best in Canada by the Times Higher Education ranking. The university currently has over 400,000 alumni worldwide.

The university has 15 faculties and 2 affiliated schools that range from music to health sciences. In F2016, it reports having 66,506 enrolled students with 45,789 from UdeM, 12,120 from HEC Montréal and 7,597 from Polytechnique Montréal. Undergraduate students make up 74% of the student body and the university was home to 9,341 international students.  Maclean’s University Rankings report that standout programs at the university are the biopharmaceutical sciences, strategic eco-design and digital music programs.

The university is the 3rd largest research university in Canada with research revenues and grants of $531 million. It hosted 465 research units and 133 Canada Research Chairs. It works with 37 partner health institutions for its research and counts 2,640 professors and researchers. The university has an expansive library, hosting 1.6 million books and 2 million digital and audiovisual files.

Moving forward, UdeM seeks to advance its collaboration with other institutions, promote interdisciplinary collaboration and be an engine of innovation.

Financial Review:

L’Université de Montréal is a large-cap charity with donations of $15.3m in F2016. The university’s administrative costs are 6% of total revenues and fundraising costs are 39% of total donations. For every dollar donated, 56 cents goes towards its programs, falling outside of Ci’s reasonable range. The university has negative funding reserves due to debt obligations and an endowment of $300m.
