About Canadian Opera Company:

Founded in 1950, the Canadian Opera Company is the largest producer of opera in Canada, and one of the five largest in North America. It strives to bring the transformative experience of opera to local, national and global audiences every day. Its productions take place in the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto and is under the leadership of General Director Alexander Neef.

In the 2015/2016 season, the Canadian Opera Company had 56 mainstage performances of 6 productions. The productions were Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, Barbara Monk Feldman’s Pyramus and Thisbe, Richard Wagner’s Siegfried, Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Georges Bizet’s Carmen, and Gioachino Rossini’s Maometto II. It had an average attendance of 91% with 105,228 tickets sold. Of these patrons, it sold 22,113 tickets to new patrons and 9,712 to young people 29 years and younger. 

The Canadian Opera Company also has outreach programs in its effort to engage audiences and communities to facilitate new points of entry and enhance accessibility to opera. Its programs cover all age groups and interests, from summer camps for children to pre-performance opera chats with the audience. In F2016, it reported 35,881 participants in its 390 education and outreach events. It also hosts a free concert series, which saw a total audience of 12,440 people. Moving forward, it seeks to reach 50,000 participants annually through its community programs.

The Canadian Opera Company also has a training program – the Ensemble Studio. Since its inception in 1980 this program has educated over 220 young Canadian opera professionals.

Financial Review:

The Canadian Opera Company is a large-cap charity with donations of $9.9m in F2016. Its administrative costs are 15% of revenues and fundraising costs are 21% of revenues. For every dollar donated, 65 cents goes towards its programs, falling just outside of Ci’s reasonable range. It has funding reserves of $40.5m which can cover program costs for 1.7 years. Ci has included donations and assets of the Canadian Opera Foundation in its 2014 and 2015 figures from its T3010A filings with the CRA. Note: Ci substracted the cost of goods sold from revenues, reducing revenues and expenses by $5m in F2016, $5.2m in F2015 and $4.6m in F2014.
