OVERVIEW

About Richmond Hospital Foundation:

Richmond Hospital Foundation is a 2-star charity. It is financially transparent and has low overhead spending. However, the charity has a below-average results reporting score and large funding reserves that could cover over six years of program costs.

Founded in 1987, Richmond Hospital Foundation raises money to improve care at Richmond Hospital in British Columbia. The Foundation funds equipment purchases, staff education programs, and infrastructure at the hospital. It also funds research at Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute. Richmond Hospital Foundation aims to improve health care quality for the Richmond community.

Richmond Hospital Foundation funds three main areas: patient care, research, and equipment & education. The charity does not provide a breakdown of spending on these programs.

The Patient Care program raises funds to support general care, mental health support, and infrastructure expansions at Richmond Hospital. In F2022, a new in-patient acute mental health unit with 18 beds opened at the hospital. This year, the unit cared for over 250 patients, with the average patient staying for 30 days. In F2022, after years of fundraising, construction began on the Yurkovich Family Pavillion. This Pavillion will include a surgical centre, medical imaging centre, emergency department, and inpatient beds. The construction is expected to finish by 2028.

The Research program advances projects at Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute. Currently, the Foundation is funding two on-going projects at the institute. The first project studies how to prevent Adverse Drug Events. The second project studies the use of robot animals for patients with dementia.

The Equipment and Education program buys new equipment and technology for Richmond Hospital. These resources are often used to improve surgery and imaging techniques. In F2022, four operating rooms received technology upgrades, which includes adding wireless connectivity and 4K screens. About 18,000 surgeries are performed at Richmond Hospital per year. In F2022, the Foundation also helped purchase a lithotripsy laser and a minimally invasive surgical system.

Finances

In F2022, Richmond Hospital Foundation received $10.8m in donations. Combined fundraising and administrative costs are 25% of revenues (less investment income). For every dollar donated, 75 cents go to the cause, which is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

Richmond Hospital Foundation has $15.8m in funding reserves, of which $624k is donor endowed. Excluding donor-endowed funds, Richmond Hospital Foundation could grant at the same level for about six years and eight months with reserves.
