OVERVIEW

About St. Joseph's Health Care Foundation of London:

St. Joseph's Health Care Foundation of London is a 3-Star Charity. It has a B+ results reporting grade, which is above average. For every dollar donated to the charity, 80 cents are available to go to the cause, which is within Ci's reasonable range.

Founded in 2004, St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation of London (SJHCF) raises funds to invest in research, patient care, and education at St. Joseph’s Hospital (SJH). St. Joseph’s Hospital is a Catholic health care organization owned by the St. Joseph’s Health Care Society. SJHCF funds four patient care facilities: St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkwood Institute, Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care, and Southwest Centre for Forensic Mental Health Care. SJHCF also funds the Lawson Health Research Institute, which focuses on research to improve patient care at SJH.

In F2023, SJHCF raised $18.0 million and granted $9.6 million to St. Joseph’s Hospital. SJHCF funds two core programs: Research and Patient Care.

Research represented 65% of program costs in F2023. SJHCF grants to the Lawson Health Research Institute to improve patient care at SJH. The charity states Lawson is ranked the eighth best research institute in the country. In F2023, SJH had 486 ongoing clinical trials. The charity collected 1,050 tissue samples from patients to improve breast cancer research in F2023.

Patient Care represented 35% of total program costs in F2023. SJH reports it received 787,000 patient visits and performed 23,000 surgeries in F2023. The charity provided funds to expand the Ivey Eye Institute. This expansion allowed 2,000 patients to receive vision saving surgery in F2023. The Parkwood Institute is a 402-bed healthcare facility that offers rehabilitation services to older adults, veterans, and patients who suffer from mental health. SJH provided over 300 meals to Canadian war veterans in F2023. The Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care is a 394-bed home that provides care for the elderly. The Southwest Centre for Forensic Mental Health Care is an 89-bed building that provides assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation to those with mental illnesses.

Results and Impact

The Lawson Health Research Institute discovered a new way to treat C. difficile infection. C. difficile is a germ that causes diarrhea and colitis in the colon. The research team receives donated feces from healthy donors and puts it into a pill for patients to eat. The healthy feces boosts the immune system of patients and improves gut health. SJH adopted this research innovation and reports a 96% cure rate through the fecal transplants.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation of London’s results and impact.

This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).
