OVERVIEW

About Girl Guides of Canada:

Girl Guides of Canada is a 1-star charity with a below-average results reporting score. Its overhead costs are outside of Ci’s reasonable range, and it has reserve funds to cover program costs for thirteen years and five months.

Founded in 1912, Girl Guides of Canada (GGC) offers after-school and weekend programs that encourage girls to make new friends, build skills, and inspire change in the world. GGC runs activities and programs relating to arts, science, and awareness of global issues. Girl Guides of Canada is one of 150 members of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.

Girl Guides of Canada runs Guiding programs for girls aged 5 to 17. Girl Guides of Canada reports that it currently has around 97,000 members across the country. The program is divided into six branches by age: Sparks (5-6 years), Embers (7-8 years), Guides (9-11 years), Pathfinders (12-14 years), Rangers (15-17 years), and Lones (any age). Each member is assigned to a local unit based on age and location, meeting weekly with other members for one to two hours. Each unit can decide on its individual activities, but GGC provides suggestions such as tree planting, resume building, skills training, and camping.

In F2022, Girl Guides of Canada partnered with the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund for its 2021-2023 National Service Project: ReconciliACTIONs. Through the project, members have raised awareness and learned about reconciliation.

Finances

In F2022, Girl Guides of Canada does not report any direct donations, but it received $4.7m in net income from the sale of cookies and merchandise, representing 33% of total revenues (excluding investment income). The charity also received $6.6m in membership and event fees, representing 46% of total revenues (excluding investment income).

Administrative costs are 76% of revenues (less investment income) after the exclusion of costs of business activities and gain on sale of property. However, if administrative costs are calculated using the charity’s reported revenue of $30.3m, the ratio drops down to 36%. Reported fundraising costs outside of fundraising for business activities is 0%. This results in a total overhead spending of 76%. For every dollar donated to the charity, 24 cents go to the cause. This falls outside of Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending, which has been the case for the past three years.

Girl Guides of Canada has total reserve funds of $143.0m, of which $206k is donor-endowed. Excluding donor-endowed funds, the charity could cover annual program costs for 13 years and five months.

This charity report is an update that has been sent to Girl Guides of Canada for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
