About Women's Auxiliary of the Hospital for Sick Children:
Founded in 1950, Women’s Auxiliary of the Hospital for Sick Children, or Women’s Auxiliary Volunteers (WAV) aims to provide another dimension of care for patients and their families at SickKids. WAV also raises funds to support the clinical, research and learning endeavours of SickKids. The charity currently has 220 volunteers that support its programs, the largest of which are the WAV PlayPark and Patient Amenities.
The WAV PlayPark (92% of program spending in F2019) is a safe and happy place for siblings of patients and children visiting clinics to play during visits to the hospital. The park aims to make hospital visits easier for families by providing siblings of patients, and children visiting clinics a play area staffed by Registered Early Childhood Educators and volunteers.
WAV’s Bravery Bead program (2% of program spending in F2019) allows children to collect a different bead for each procedure or event while visiting the hospital for treatment. The goal of the program is to make a necklace with beads that represent the child’s journey, which is something they can be proud of.
WAV raises over half of its funds through the 5Fifty5 Shop, which had net revenues of $607k in F2019. The 5Fifty5 Shop is operated by the volunteers of WAV, who sell books, toys, gifts and SickKids logo items to hospital visitors and patients.
The charity reports that the remaining 6% of program spending is allocated to General Projects at SickKids hospital.
