Launched in 2009, G(irls)20’s mission is to “advance the full participation of girls and women globally through their economic and educational empowerment”. It works in partnership with individuals, foundations, the social profit sector, governments and the private sector to empower girls and women to be agents of economic and social change. The charity reports that of companies in Canada that disclose the gender makeup of their boards, only 14.5% of members are women. G(irls)20 has two programs, Global Summit and Girls on Boards, which invest in young women through education and training. The charity’s head office is in Toronto.
G(irls)20 organizes an annual global summit that takes place in the G20 host country. One female delegate aged 18-23 from each G20 country, plus a representative from the African Union, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the MENA region, are selected to attend each year. Delegates participate in panel discussions and workshops focused on building their skills in technology, entrepreneurism, communications and leadership. The past three summits have taken place in Turkey (2015), China (2016) and Germany (2017). The 2018 will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
G(irls)20 launched its second program in 2017, called Girls on Boards. The charity recognizes that there is a severe lack of young, female representation in boardrooms in Canada. The Girls on Boards program trains, mentors and places women between the ages of 18-25 on non-profit boards to build leadership skills as Directors. After completing online training and several months of coaching with a G(irls)20 approved coach, participants begin their one-year term on the board. In its first year of running, the program had 19 “Future Board Members and 17 coaches from 17 boards. It currently is active in New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.
Results and Impact: G(irls)20 Summit participants are matched with mentors in various industries after attending the Summit. With their new skills and experiences from the conference, each delegate is encouraged to create their own initiatives or help scale up existing programs which empower girls and women in their communities. In the charity’s 2017 Summit Recap, it reports that more than 80 G(irls)20 Ambassador-led initiatives around the world have been started due to these mentorships.
G(irls)20 is a Small charity with donations of $675k in F2017, a 29% increase compared to F2015. The charity receives no government funding and donations are its only source of revenue. Administrative costs are 10% of total revenues and fundraising costs are 7% of donations. For every dollar donated to the charity, $0.83 goes towards its programs, which falls within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. G(irls)20 has funding reserves of $239k, which can cover 8 months of annual program costs, indicating a need for donations.
In F2016, G(irls)20 reported its first paid employees on its T3010 filing with the CRA. It reported that it paid 2 part-time employees an average salary of $452.
