OVERVIEW
About Ronald McDonald House Charities Alberta:
Ronald McDonald House Charities Alberta is a one-star charity with low demonstrated impact. It has a B+ results reporting grade, which is above average. For every dollar donated to the charity, 63 cents are available to go to the cause, which is outside Ci's reasonable range. The charity's reserves can cover over six years of its annual program costs. Read Ci's report before donating.
Ronald McDonald House Northern Alberta merged with Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta in 2018. The merged charity is now called Ronald McDonald House Charities Alberta and operates using (the former) Southern Alberta's charitable registration number. Ronald McDonald House Charities Alberta (RMHCA) supports families with seriously ill children while they receive treatment in local hospitals. RMHCA reports that every year in Alberta 8,000 seriously ill children need to travel more than 100km round trip to access health care. RMHCA’s Houses help families regain a sense of normalcy while dealing with emotional and financial challenges related to their child’s medical treatment. The charity asks families that stay at its Houses to pay $12 per night, but reports no family will be turned away if they are unable to pay.
Ronald McDonald House Charities Alberta’s Houses are in Edmonton, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, and Calgary. In F2022, the charity provided 22,000 nights of comfort to 1,213 families. The average length of stay was 17 nights in Edmonton and Calgary and five nights in Red Deer and Medicine Hat. RMHCA served 311 communities in F2022, of which 288 were within Alberta. The charity has 87 rooms across Alberta: Edmonton has 38, Calgary has 32, Red Deer has 11, and Medicine Hat has six.
The charity reports that it was only able to meet 14% of the total need for its services and that nine out of ten eligible families must be turned away due to lack of space. Due to this, RMHCA is building new facilities that will triple its capacity in Calgary and Edmonton. Construction will begin in 2023.
RMHCA has operated Canada’s only Ronald McDonald Care Mobile for the past nine years. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile Unit is a 40-foot van that provides free medical, dental, and health education services directly to underserved families. This van was repurposed to support mothers and newborns in an isolated environment during covid-19. The van was retired in February 2021.
