About Camp Ooch:
Founded in 1983, Camp Oochigeas (Camp Ooch) provides camp experiences for children with cancer, offering opportunities for learning and personal growth through fun and challenging activities. Programs cater to children aged 0-18 whether they are in active treatment or remission. Camp Ooch also runs events that involve the families of children with cancer.
In F2017, Camp Ooch allocated 59% of program spending to running programs in Muskoka. Two-week camp sessions are offered three times each summer to children with cancer, aged 6-14. Camp activities include swimming, waterskiing, canoeing, fishing, high ropes, rock-climbing, and pottery. All campers participate in a cook-out, overnight camping trip, or three-day canoe outing. A children’s cancer doctor and three cancer nurses are always available at the camp’s “Med Shed”. Camp Ooch is the only overnight camp in Ontario with onsite chemotherapy IV treatment and blood transfusions. Week-long camp experiences are offered to children who have lost a sibling to cancer, and for teens who are newly diagnosed with cancer.
Camp Ooch allocated 41% of program spending to In-Community programs. At its facility in downtown Toronto, Camp Ooch runs a city day camp, March break camp, and evening programming for families. These programs are important for kids who are too sick to attend overnight camp. At Camp Robin Hood in Markham, Camp Ooch runs a summer day camp for kids aged 4-7. The charity also organizes weekly games and activities at hospitals in Toronto, Hamilton, London, Newmarket, Scarborough, and Mississauga.
In F2017, Camp Ooch renovated its dining hall and opened larger and more accessible cabins. The camp is now able to accommodate 50% more kids. Improvements to the Med Shed, the arts and music centre and volunteer housing are expected to be complete in F2018.
Results and Impact: Camp Ooch reports that children build confidence and make new friends through camp.
