About Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation:

Founded in 1980, Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation (SJRHF) raises money for Saint John Regional Hospital and the wider Horizon Health Network in New Brunswick. The foundation works to improve the quality of healthcare in the province by funding capital equipment, research, patient comfort, mental wellness, and education projects.

In F2018, SJRHF allocated 47% of spending to capital equipment purchases. These items included a SimMan patient simulator for educating emergency departments, four pediatric hospital beds, 12 each of recliners and recliner beds for palliative care, a humidifier, blanket warmer, and ventilation for the gene sequencing lab. The foundation is working to raise $5.5m to renovate Clinic 1, the busiest clinic at Saint John Regional Hospital. More than 40,000 patients receive care at the clinic each year, of which 24,000 are treated at the heart centre.

Research received 27% of grants in F2018. Research grant recipients examine lung cancer treatment, preventing heart failure, and “prehabilitation” where the health of spinal surgery patients is improved before surgery to improve recovery.

In F2018, SJRHF allocated 15% of grants to improving patient care. Among other items, the foundation purchased sofa chairs for the NICU, and supported patients with financial assistance related to prescription and travel expenses.

The remaining 7% and 4% of grants were used for mental wellness and education respectively. Dr Wendy Stewart received more than $145,000 to support their work improving youth mental health. Education continues the training of healthcare professionals including more than 185 registered nurses and licensed practical nurses who attended a two-day networking and professional development conference.

Results and Impact:

In F2016, SJRHF began funding a three-year social pediatrics research coordinator position. In working with the coordinator, the NB Social Pediatrics Research Program secured over $1 million in funding during a six-month period. The program will examine the effect on health of living conditions such as income, education, home environment, and access to social services.

Financial Review:

Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation is a medium-sized charity with donations of $4.2m in F2018. The foundation received $1.1m of income from lotteries net of expenses, representing 19% of total revenues. Administrative costs are 9% of revenues less investment income, and fundraising costs are 25% of donations. For every dollar donated, 66 cents go to the cause, which is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

SJRHF has $23.5m in funding reserves, of which $12.4m is donor-endowed. Excluding donor-endowed funds, the foundation could grant at the F2018 level for 2.5 years using reserves.

This charity profile is an update that has been sent to Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
