OVERVIEW

About YWCA NWT:

Founded in 1966 as YWCA Yellowknife, YWCA NWT aims to build safe and equitable communities where women, girls, and families can realize their full potential. The charity provides affordable housing to families, support and emergency shelter to women escaping domestic violence, and organizes children’s programs in the Northwest Territories.

In F2018, 45% of program spending was allocated to housing. The charity has 18 units of affordable housing for women and children. In October 2018, YWCA NWT’s Rockhill apartment was destroyed in a fire. The charity continues to support clients in outside traditional housing but was not accepting new clients for the family housing program at the time of this report.

Family violence prevention programs received 31% of program spending in F2018. YWCA NWT operates Alison McAteer House in Yellowknife and Sutherland House in Fort Smith. The houses provide emergency shelter for women and children escaping violence.

In F2018, 24% of program spending was allocated to children and youth services. Dudes Club, GirlSpace, and Project Child Recovery allow youth to participate in fun activities and volunteering in a safe, accepting space. YWCA NWT is the largest provider of licensed after-school childcare in the NWT, having cared for 311 families in F2018.

In addition to regular programming, YWCA NWT advocates for a strategy to reduce homelessness and poverty in the territory, and for a local recovery program for men who abuse.

Results and Impact

In F2018, YWCA NWT sheltered 153 women and 117 children escaping violence. The charity also helped to keep 91 women safe by helping them to receive Emergency Protection Orders (EPOs). An EPO requires that an abusive partner leave the family home for 90 days and avoids victims, including any children, becoming homeless.
