Founded in 2012, Ronald McDonald House of Newfoundland and Labrador (RMHNL) provides accommodation for sick children and their families who travel to receive pediatric treatment at Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John’s. RMHNL is one of the 365 international Ronald McDonald Houses and one of the 16 within Canada. RMHNL’s house has 15 family suites, each equipped with two queen beds. Families have access to a resource centre, laundry facilities, children play areas, and a family movie theatre. The charity asks families to contribute $15 per night, but no family is turned away if they are unable to pay.
In F2022 RMHNL spent $796k on its program, including $292k in donated goods and services in kind. The charity’s only program is its Ronald McDonald House. RMHNL’s F2022 annual report was not available at the time of this review. Ci used the F2021 annual report instead.
RMHNL provided 3,370 nights of accommodation to 141 sick children in F2021. The average length of stay was 16 nights. 27% of families come from eastern Newfoundland, 26% from central Newfoundland, 22% from both western Newfoundland and Labrador-Grenfell area. The remaining 3% is from out of province.
The charity runs eight subprograms within its Ronald McDonald House. Some include the Home for Dinner program, where the charity cooks a meal for a family after a stressful day; a Baked Goods program; a Recreation Room program; and a Magic Room program. In F2021, RMHNL received 277 visits to its magic room, provided 89 baked goods, 227 meals through home for dinner, and prepared 7,945 meals.
