OVERVIEW

About Canadian Liver Foundation:

Canadian Liver Foundation is a 3-star charity with a below-average results reporting grade. It spends 43% on overhead costs, which is outside Ci's reasonable range for overhead spending. The charity is financially transparent.

Founded in 1969, Canadian Liver Foundation (CLF) states that it was the first organization in the world to focus on supporting research and education on the causes, diagnoses, prevention and treatment of liver diseases. CLF’s mission is to promote liver health and provide hope for people living with liver disease by funding liver research, increasing public awareness education, running support programs, and advocating for liver health. CLF states that 1 in 4 Canadians may be affected by liver disease, and many do not even know it. Despite funding an extensive number of projects annually, the charity states that 80% of qualified research grant applications annually still go unfunded.

CLF spent $1.6m on research programs and grants in F2020 (61% of total program costs and grants). This included $320k in operating grants, $25k on graduate studentships, and $12k on summer studentships. In F2020, CLF awarded grants to support eight research projects.

Education made up 19% of program costs and grants in F2020. The remainder of program and grant costs went towards CLF’s advocacy work (14%) and provincial chapters (6%). CLF advocates at all levels of government to emphasize the importance of liver-related health issues and support for those affected. It also has chapters in all 13 provinces and territories.

Finances

Canadian Liver Foundation received donations of $5.2m in F2020. It also received $482k (9% of total revenues) in government funding. Administrative costs are 23% of revenues (less investment income) and fundraising costs are 21% of donations. For every dollar donated, 57 cents go towards the charity’s programs and grants. This is outside Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

CLF’s funding reserves of $8.4m can cover annual program costs and research grants for 3.1 years.

CLF reports using external fundraisers as part of its fundraising activities. In its most recent F2020 T3010 CRA filing, CLF reports spending $790k on external fundraisers that raised $1.4m on behalf of the charity. This means that it cost the charity 57 cents to raise a dollar using external fundraisers.

This charity report is an update that has been sent to Canadian Liver Foundation for review. Comments and edits may be forthcoming.
