OVERVIEW

About Wycliffe:

Wycliffe Bible Translators of Canada is a 4-star charity. It has an average results reporting grade and $5m in funding reserves that can cover program costs for four months.

Founded in 1968, Wycliffe Bible Translators of Canada (Wycliffe) translates the Bible into other languages. Its mission is to end Bible poverty around the world. It works in Asia, South America, Africa, and North America. Wycliffe’s Canadian head office is in Calgary.

Wycliffe works with local translators, churches and global missionaries to translate the Bible into local languages. It reports that one in five people around the world don’t have access to the whole Bible in a language they best understand. Besides Bible translation, Wycliffe trains staff to carry out literacy and education programs in the countries it works in, and also trains local translators.

In F2021, Wycliffe spent $13.4 million on programming. 82% was for field programs, 9% for training, 4% for communications, and 5% for public relations. Wycliffe ran 235 language groups in 38 countries, which reached 336 million people.

Through the Eastern Lawa project in Southeast Asia, Wycliffe is translating materials that will help the Eastern Lawa engage with scriptures. As of this update, 50 oral Bible stories have been completed and distributed via a smartphone app. Wycliffe has also provided 15 scholarships for Eastern Lawa children.

The Cree Initiative project trains and supports local First Nations people in Canada to do Bible translations and promote the use of God’s Word in their heart languages. It is focused on five related Cree groups, totaling 100,000 plus people. Through this project, 24 different Cree mother-tongue Bible translators have received training at three workshops. Wycliffe’s AIDIA project is a local ministry in southern Peru that’s working to translate the entire Bible into the Eastern Apurímac Quechua language. Through this program, about 6,000 adults, youth and children have learned how to read their language. More than 70 new churches have been planted and 40 existing churches have been strengthened through AIDIA’s training course.

Results and Impact

The Wycliffe Thai Foundation project in Southeast Asia has helped more than 100 villagers in a neighbouring country learn to reach the Bible in their language.

Finances

Wycliffe received $14.1m in Canadian donations in F2021. It also received $3.4m in international funding. Administrative costs are 15% of revenues (excluding investment income) and fundraising costs are 7% of Canadian donations. Wycliffe spends 22% on overhead. This means for every dollar donated, 78 cents go towards the charity’s programs. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

Wycliffe’s net funding reserves of $5.0m can cover annual program costs and grants to other Canadian charities at current levels for just over four months.

This report is an update that has been sent to Wycliffe for review. Comments and edits may be forthcoming.
