OVERVIEW

About National Ballet of Canada:

National Ballet of Canada is a 2-star charity. It follows best practices for financial transparency and has reasonable overhead costs. However, it has non-endowed funding reserves of $52.2m that can cover its program costs for nearly 4 years. Before you give, read Charity Intelligence's report.

National Ballet of Canada (National Ballet) was founded in 1951, with offices currently in Toronto, Ontario. National Ballet performs classical and contemporary ballet for the Canadian public. It seeks to show artistic excellence by attracting and developing dancers and musicians of the highest caliber. Moreover, it aims to be a national symbol of Canada’s cultural heritage. National Ballet performs three extended engagements in Toronto and does national/international tours

National Ballet of Canada highlights its commitment to community outreach. It puts on a range of programs to provide families and youth, who would otherwise be unable, the opportunity to experience the ballet. The main program is YOU dance, which provides free workshops and performances to students in grades four to six. In F2021, YOU dance delivered virtual visits and workshops to 7,705 students.

During F2021, the National Ballet performed virtually due to covid-19. Its Expansive Dances performance had 146,033 views. Its Spotlight Series that included Commissioned Dance Films and Short Programmes had 1,004,245 views in F2021. In partnership with Cineplex, National Ballet delivered a special presentation of The Nutcracker available online and in select theatres. The performance downloaded 8,408 times. National Ballet also offered 1,600 families free access to the performance.

Note: Ci has consolidated the audited financial statements of The National Ballet of Canada and The National Ballet of Canada, Endowment Foundation in its financial analysis. Ci has used the aggregate contributions to the Endowment Fund for the F2021 donor-endowed funds as the charity did not report the donor-endowed funds for F2021 in its audited financial statements. Ci did not include transfers between the operating charity and the foundation in revenues and expenses, $2.7m in F2021, $3.7m in F2020, and $3.8 in F2019. Ci backed amortization out of program, administrative, and fundraising costs on a pro-rata basis. Ci reported donations from American Friends of National Ballet of Canada as international donations. Ci removed special events revenue from Canadian Donations and reported it as special events revenue.
