OVERVIEW

About York University:

Founded in 1959, York University (York U) is the second-largest university in Ontario and the third-largest in Canada. Its vision is to offer a high quality, research-intensive learning environment for a diversity of students. In Ontario, York U runs a Keele Campus and a Glendon Campus. It is also in the process of building a new Markham Campus, set to open in fall 2023. Outside of Canada, York U operates a Hyderabad Campus for MBA programs in India and a Las Nubes EcoCampus for environmental studies in Costa Rica. York U’s main programs are education and research, for which it does not provide a spending breakdown.

In the 2020-2021 academic year, York University had 49,543 undergraduate students and 6,283 graduate students. This included a total of 16,069 international students. Across 12 faculties, York U offers 178 programs and 244 degree options. In 2020, York U established Canada’s first dedicated School of Global Health and a new Centre of Excellence in Health Management and Leadership. It also offered 763 online or blended courses to adapt to online learning in 2020.

York University funds innovative research projects across its faculties and departments. In 2020, York U reported that its students and faculty produced 2,376 research publications. This included 1,164 papers co-authored internationally. York U also holds 31 Canada Research Chair positions. In response to the covid-19 pandemic, York U created a new fund to provide $300k across 20 covid-19 research projects in 2020.

Results and Impact

York U has not yet posted its 2021 annual report at the time of this update. Certain results refer to 2020.

In April 2020, York University completed an impact assessment with Higher Education Strategy Associates (HESA), an independent social audit firm. Its impact evaluation found that York U directly contributed $2.3 billion in value and 10,569 jobs to Ontario’s economy in 2018. When including the indirect effects of spending, HESA estimated that York U added $4.4 billion in value and 13,480 jobs.

York U measures undergraduate employment rates both six months and two years after graduation. Among all graduates in 2016, 85% found jobs within six months and 93% found jobs within two years.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of York University’s results and impact. This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).

Finances

York U does not disclose fundraising costs in its audited financial statements. It instead reports fundraising on its T3010 filing with the Charities Directorate, which is most recently available for F2020. Overhead costs are understated for F2021.

York University is a Major 100 charity, one of Canada’s largest charities in terms of donations. It received donations of $28.7m in F2021. During the year, it also received $769.1m in tuition and service fees (58% of revenues) and $388.2m in government grants (29% of revenues). In F2020, the most recent year that fundraising costs could be obtained from T3010 filings, administrative costs were 13% of revenues (less investment income) and fundraising costs were 19% of donations. This resulted in total overhead spending of 32%. For every dollar donated to the charity, 68 cents went to the cause. This was within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

York U has $1.1 billion in net funding reserves, of which $560k is donor-endowed. Excluding donor-endowed funds, the charity can cover 60% or around seven months of annual program costs with its existing reserves.

Charity Intelligence has sent this update to York University for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
