OVERVIEW

About Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation:

Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation is a 3-star charity with an average results reporting score. Its funding reserves can cover annual program costs for over 3 years.

Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation (SLRF) is the fundraising arm of Southlake Regional Health Centre, a full-service hospital located in Newmarket, Ontario. SLRF raises funds to support leading-edge patient care at Southlake Regional Health Centre, which the charity reports around 1.5 million people depend on. SLRF notes that Southlake Regional Health Centre is the fourth busiest emergency department in Ontario, and it had 111,885 visits in F2020. The Centre also facilitated 11,861 operating room procedures, tested close to 152,000 people for covid-19, and helped birth 2,600 babies, in F2020.

In F2021, Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation granted the Centre $8.1m for equipment and technology purchases, capital upgrade and renovation projects, patient care, and staff education. Specifically, the Foundation works to fund the Centre's cardiac, cancer, surgical, mental health, maternal child & paediatrics, emergency, medicine, and men and women's health programs. No breakdown of spending by program was provided by the charity.

Equipment and Technology: This program works to fund new equipment or replace old equipment that the government does not provide funding for. In F2020, SLRF helped purchase 12 post-anesthetic care unit monitors for operating rooms, four echo consoles, a Hana orthopaedic table and a portable, digital X-Ray machine for the hospital.

Capital Upgrades and Renovations: SLRF supports the Centre by funding the upgrades, expansion, or upkeep of the Centre's physical infrastructure. The charity reports that Southlake Regional Health Centre sees 17 mental health patients on average in its emergency department daily, which means that its occupancy rate can be as high as 180%. Thus, in F2020, SLRF funded a new Emergent Mental Health Assessment Unit with six private rooms. The charity is currently working towards expanding the Adult Inpatient Mental Health Unit to increase its capacity by 400 people annually, as well as for a total hospital renovation.

Patient Care: Through this program, SLRF funds initiatives not covered by the government that improve patient care. In F2020, SLRF facilitated nearly 3,900 virtual family visits to connect patients with their loved ones during covid-19, and supported the 117,168 chemotherapy and supportive treatment visits as well as the 33,513 mental health outpatient visits the hospital saw in F2020.

Other funding went to staff education, to improve the training of the hospital's 629 physicians and 868 students.

Results and Impact

Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation reports that the hospital performed 82% of its surgical cancer procedures within the provincial wait time, reduced emergency department visits by 30% through its extended after-hours telehealth services, and reduced wait times for homecare from 13.1 days to 1.1 days through its community programs. Technological upgrades have allowed for post anterior hip replacement surgery hospital recovery time reductions from four/five days to one day. The two additional instrument trays SLRF funded in F2020 have doubled the hospital's capacity to perform minimally invasive heart surgeries.

SLRF reports that the Centre had 99% patient satisfaction in its cancer ward and that 82% of patients rated the cardiac care they received as the best possible, in F2020.

Charity Intelligence highlights these key results. They may not be a complete representation of Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation's results. Charity Intelligence has not assessed impact on SLRF. This shows as n/r, meaning not rated.
