About GlobalMedic:

Founded in 1998, the David McAntony Gibson Foundation operates and is commonly known as GlobalMedic. It became a registered charity in 2002. GlobalMedic is a disaster response charity sending Canadian volunteers who are trained first-responders, notably EMS workers. The volunteers help by providing clean water, medicine, shelter, and conducting search and rescue. The charity focuses on maximizing the amount of relief provided in the first 72 hours after a disaster, while minimizing their own operating costs.

Since 2002, GlobalMedic has responded to 193 crises in 67 countries. In F2017 GlobalMedic spent $1.8 million on disaster responses.

Results and Impact: GlobalMedic's response to Hurricane Matthew in Haiti was likely the largest effort in F2017. It provided clean drinking water to over 100,000 people around Le Cayes, on the hard-hit south coast. GlobalMedic provided 2 water systems, 5 water purification units, 288,000 water purification tablets, 6,190 bucket gravity water units, and 500 WASH kits. Also noteworthy is the construction of 4 evacuation shelters in Leyte, Philippines, a multi-year project GlobalMedic completed in F2017. In Sri Lanka, GlobalMedic provided clean drinking water to over 9,000 vulnerable people in the flood-affected Kegalle District.

Finances

Charity Intelligence has reviewed the unaudited financial statements for the David McAntony Gibson Foundation. Canada's Charities Directorate recommends that charities with annual donations over $250,000 have audited financial statements.

GlobalMedic is a medium-sized charity with donations and fundraising revenue of $2.4m in F2017. Donations fell by 54% compared to the previous year. GlobalMedic states that 100% of donations from individuals go directly to its programs. Corporate support or foundation grants may be assessed a management fee.

GlobalMedic's financial statements do not not report any fundraising costs or administrative expenses, except for $237 spent on fundraising in F2016. The figures presented below for fundraising and admin costs are taken from GlobalMedic's annual filing. For every $1 donated, 100 cents go to the cause. This falls outside of Ci’s reasonable range. Donors should be aware that extremely low overhead costs can be a risk to the charity's operational abilities. Charities working internationally, particularly in disaster responses, need proper safeguarding mechanisms to ensure the safety of vulnerable beneficiaries.

GlobalMedic has funding reserves of $3.1m which can cover 1.7 years of program costs.

This charity report is an update that GlobalMedic has reviewed. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
