About United Way Elgin Middlesex:
United Way Elgin Middlesex is a 3-star charity. It is financially transparent and has reasonable overhead costs. However, it has a below-average results reporting grade of B-.
United Way Elgin Middlesex (UWEM), formerly United Way London Middlesex and United Way Elgin-St. Thomas, provides grants to local organizations to address human service needs in London and Middlesex and Elgin Counties.
Its three main focus areas are From Poverty to Possibility; All That Kids Can be; and Healthy People, Strong Communities. The charity does not provide a breakdown of spending for these three areas.
UWEM focuses on reducing the effects of poverty in the community. It reports that one in seven people in London, Ontario live in poverty. In F2023, the charity’s funded partners provided 6,700 emergency shelter nights. The funded partners also provided 1,660 food boxes.
United Way Elgin Middlesex aims to help all children reach their potential. One in four children in London live in poverty, as well as one in five children in Elgin-St. Thomas. In F2023, UWEM-funded partners matched 730 children and youth with a mentor. Another UWEM partner provided backpacks to 3,500 kids.
UWEM focuses on improving the wellbeing of the community, especially through mental health services. In F2023, 28,300 calls were made to the Canadian Mental Health Association Middlesex Support Line, a UWEM-funded partner.

Results and Impact
In F2023, United Way Elgin Middlesex provided funding to The Inn St. Thomas, a local shelter. This organization provided 29,000 meals to 217 people. UWEM-funded partners helped 1,620 children and youth in Elgin Middlesex increase their literacy and numeracy skills. Grant recipients also helped 3,076 children from low-income families increase their physical activity and sense of belonging. After receiving support from a UWEM-funded program, 10,738 people increased their ability to cope and improve their situations.
While Ci highlights these results, this may not be a complete representation of United Way Elgin Middlesex’s results and impact.

Finances
United Way Elgin Middlesex received $7.3m in donations and special events revenues in F2023. Combined fundraising and administrative costs are 22% of revenues (less investment income). Total overhead spending is 22%. For each dollar donated, 78 cents go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.
Reserve funds of $6.3m can cover program and grant expenses for one year and two months. Included in reserve funds are the value of two funds held at the London Community Foundation. The Forever Fund had a value of $1.2m and the Stability Fund had a value of $171k at the end of F2023.
UWEM’s T3010 filing with the CRA is not yet publicly available for F2023 at the time of tis report. In its T3010 filings, it reports government funding of $0 in F2022 and $3.0m in F2021. Ci reports the charity’s government funding from its audited financial statements.
UWEM’s audited financial statements do not clearly separate grants to other organizations and in-house program spending. Ci allocated United Way Community Services expenses to program costs. Ci classified Community Fund, Local Love Giving Campaign, and Strategic Investment expenses as grants.
