OVERVIEW

About Yellow Brick House:

Yellow Brick House is a 3-star charity. It has reasonable overhead costs but is not financially transparent. It also has a below average results reporting grade, meaning it does not report the results of its programs well.

Founded in 1978, Yellow Brick House (YBH), formally known as Project Hostel, offers free and confidential services to women and children in York Region who have experienced domestic violence and abuse. YBH’s main programs include Shelters, Crisis & Support Line, Counselling & Support Services for women and children, and Public Education. Yellow Brick House notes that compared to previous years the number of confirmed murders of women has increased by more than 50% in Ontario. Due to covid-19 restrictions, there has been a 30% increase in domestic violence. Yellow Brick House served 5,847 women and children in F2022.

YBH operates two shelters that have a total of 51 beds and cribs. In F2022, 233 women and children stayed in the emergency shelters. It also has a Crisis & Support Line that has counsellors available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In F2022, YBH provided 26,331 hours of counselling and support to women and children. YBH runs programs such as a 10-week When Love Hurts group to help women understand patterns of abuse, a 10-week Let’s Talk Child Witness Program that helps children learn to cope with witnessing abuse, and a 10-week parenting program Mothers in Mind.

Yellow Brick House also runs public education programs that help teach the public the warning signs of abuse, how to support peers experiencing violence, and how to have healthy relationships. In F2022, YBH reached 2,162 youth through its public education programs.
