Toronto Humane Society reports that there are roughly 16.5 million pet cats and dogs in Canada. It adds that between 2008 and 2018, two million cats and dogs were adopted in the country. Along with the increase in adoptions, the number of pets that have current relationships with veterinarians decreased, with only about 40% of pet cats and dogs in Canada in current contact with a veterinarian. Toronto Humane Society adds that 30% of animal surrenders result from a medical condition that the pet owner cannot afford to care for. The charity reports that every year in Ontario, 400,000 animals enter animal shelters, either surrendered by their owners or as strays.
