About Sinai Health Foundation:

Established in 1975, Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation changed its name in 2016 to Sinai Health Foundation.  This name changed during the formation of Sinai Health System, a new organization that resulted from a voluntary amalgamation between Mount Sinai Hospital, Bridgepoint Active Healthcare, Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, and Circle of Care, a home healthcare provider. Together, the collective organizations are building a "vertically integrated" health care system that provides medical research, treatment, rehabilitation and home care services. The aim is to provide patients with better care and smoother transitions between services. The Foundation's mission is to deliver exceptional care in hospital, community, and home, focusing on the health conditions with the greatest impact on the overall health of the population. 

The health system put out a combined annual report for F2016 that detailed the outputs of each of their healthcare centres. Mount Sinai Hospital is dedicated to geriatric care and had 62,793 emergency visits and 28,208 admissions in F2016. The hospital has 418 beds and 4,524 staff, including 1,239 nurses.

Bridgepoint Active Healthcare, which is designed to provide care to more complex patients, had 2,480 admissions and 19,248 outpatient visits in F2016. The healthcare centre has 414 beds and 1,100 total staff. A typical staff team spans 11 disciplines to provide a diverse portfolio of care to each patient. Bridgepoint Active Healthcare provided a total of 85,000 hours of patient programming in F2016.

Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute has 183,000 square feet of research space to accommodate 757 staff members, of which 350 are scientists. In F2016, the research team received 1,500 grants, started 357 new clinical research projects, and had 680 research publications.

Circle of Care is an at-home service that provides personal care, cooking, and transportation to seniors. In F2016, 902 staff and 449 volunteers provided 894,886 hours of personal support, 158,098 meals and 94,430 rides to 13,292 clients. Circle of Care received 180,481 calls in F2016 and provided services in 24 languages. 1,400 clients served were holocaust survivors.

Sinai Health Foundation fundraises for research, patient care, and clinical programs at Sinai Health System. In F2017, the Foundation granted $18.3m for capital, clinic and other needs of the health system and $10.2m to the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute. The Foundation’s funds were used to support 240 research fellows and students, and provide 2,000 meals as part of the health system’s programs.

Financial Review:

Sinai Health Foundation is a Major-100 charity with $44.0m in donations and special events fundraising in F2017. Administrative costs were 7% of revenues and fundraising costs were 17% of donations. For every $1 donated, 78 cents went to the cause. This falls within Charity Intelligence’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

Funding reserves of $123.7m include $107.0m in donor-endowed funds. Excluding donor-endowed funds, the Foundation can cover 72%, or almost 9 months, of grants.

Looking at the Foundation’s T3010 filing with the CRA, Sinai Health Foundation reported using external fundraisers in F2016 – its most recent year filed. Sinai Health System Foundation started using external fundraisers in F2016 for door-to-door and telemarketing campaigns. The Foundation paid $355k to external fundraisers and did not report receiving donations through external fundraisers in its T3010 filing with the CRA. 

The average full-time salary of employees at Sinai Health Foundation was $118k in F2016 while donations per full-time staff were $888k. As such, for every $1 paid in compensation, the Foundation collected $7.49 in fundraising revenue.
