Montreal General Hospital Foundation is a 3-star charity. The charity has a C+ Results Reporting grade, which is below average. Its overhead spending is 24%, within Ci’s reasonable range. Its reserve funds can cover over eleven years of annual program costs, outside Ci’s reasonable range.  

Founded in 1973, Montreal General Hospital Foundation (MGHF) raises money for Montreal General Hospital (MGH), McGill University Centre, and the McGill Academic Health Network. The charity’s aim is to support excellence and innovation in healthcare to improve the lives of both patients and healthcare professionals. It grants money to fund Research, Patient Care, Capital and Equipment, and Education. In F2025, MGHF granted $20.7m to hospitals and health centres.  

Research received 51% of grant spending. MGHF runs Clinical Innovation Platform (CLIP), which offers a space for members to test their innovations and aids in the development, clinical validation, commercialization and growth of MedTech companies. In F2025, the charity held an event where donors, investors and guests heard pitches from six health-tech startups. After this event, MGHF offered funding to Juno Technologies, which is developing a wearable device to relieve menstrual pain, and Ora Medical, which is creating innovative remote rehabilitation solutions, in F2025. The charity also stated that there were 67 recipients of the MGH Research Awards.  

Patient Care received 23% of grant spending. The charity reported that its Dr. David Mulder Trauma Centre serves over 2 million people, including Cree and Inuit communities. The foundation funds mental health services, such as the Jacqueline Angus Psychiatric Emergency Department and Brief Intervention Unit, a 24-hour service with eight beds and two seclusion rooms. Its inpatient service offers 40 acute-care beds with interactive programming to help patients return to their daily lives. The charity reports that there were 45,000 outpatient visits, with 500 inpatient visits, 35 psychiatric residents, and an average of nearly 3,000 psychiatric consults in the emergency department in F2025.  

Capital Projects and Equipment received 14% of grant spending. The foundation reported that its grants funded a Medtronic StealthStation S8 neuro navigation unit for the MGH intensive Care Unit to enable neurosurgeons to non-invasively map out a life-saving procedure called a ventricular drain (EVD). In F2025, the charity stated that its two new state-of-the-art hybrid operating rooms are operational. This project brought innovative equipment and centralized procedures in a single room, saving time for trauma patients.   

Education received 12% of grant spending. In F2025, the foundation reported that it had 35 psychology interns and others from various disciplines. 

The charity is collaborating with the Cedars Cancer Foundation for the Together Against Cancer fundraising campaign, with the goal of raising $100 million. As of August 2025, the foundation has raised over $66 million. 

Montreal General Hospital Foundation’s audited financial statements follow activity-based costing, which is a best practice.  

In F2025, the foundation received $19.7m in donations. In F2025, MGHF had a return on investment of 9% and 5-year average return of 11%. 

Administrative costs are 10% of revenue (excluding investment income). Fundraising costs are 15% of donations. This means that overhead spending is 24%. For every dollar donated, 76 cents are available to go towards the cause, within Ci’s reasonable range.  

Montreal General Hospital Foundation had $266.1m in funding reserves, including $77.5m in donor-endowed funds. The financial statements also disclosed $27.8m in funding commitments. The charity’s funding reserves, excluding donor-endowed funds, can cover 1,123%, or just under eleven years and three months of annual program costs.  

MGHF’s most recent T3010 filing with the CRA, which was in F2024, reports that the foundation gave grants to seven organizations. The largest are McGill University Health Centre ($12.1m), McGill University Health Centre Research Institute ($6.2m), and McGill University ($1.2m).
