OVERVIEW

About Centre Street Church:

Centre Street Church is a 2-star charity with a C results reporting grade, which is below average. It is financially transparent and has reserve funds that can cover just under eight months of its annual program costs. Its overhead spending is outside of Ci’s reasonable range.

Founded in 1958, Centre Street Church (CSC) runs Christian worship services and events, supports vulnerable people in Calgary and Airdrie through free food and clothing programs, funds humanitarian mission projects in Canada and internationally, and raises money to build and expand church facilities.

CSC runs three main programs: Pursue God, Pursue Relationships, and Pursue Mission. The charity spent $14.7m on its programs in the fiscal year ending June 2025 (F2025). CSC did not provide a further breakdown of program spending.

Pursue God includes weekend services and prayer sessions. In F2025, CSC reported an average of 10,690 people attending services each weekend across its in-person and virtual locations. CSC estimates that 230 people made a first-time commitment to the church in F2025.

Pursue Relationships includes baptisms, missional groups, and the children’s ministry, helping people connect with the church and build relationships. In F2025, CSC performed 256 baptisms. The average monthly attendance in missional communities and groups was 2,808, and average attendance in the weekend children’s ministry was 820.

Pursue Mission aims to introduce new people to the faith. CSC does this through providing free meals to those in need, leadership development programs, and partnering with global agencies to help fund the building and renovation of churches internationally. In F2025, CSC served 30,242 meals through the Well Café, box lunches and hampers initiatives. Thirty youths participated in its leadership development program, and CSC worked with 18 partner agencies and 140 churches.

CSC also references two additional programs in its annual report: Pursue Simplicity, which focuses on making space for faith, rest, and church involvement, and Pursue Generosity, which encourages members to donate and volunteer.

Finances

Centre Street Church’s audited financial statements follow line-item costing, which does not align with financial reporting best practices. As such, Ci referred to CSC’s T3010 filings with the CRA to report program, administrative, and fundraising costs.

In F2025, CSC received $23.9m in donations, including $3.9m in donated property, representing 97% of its total revenue. Excluding the donated property, this is an 11% increase from $18.0m in F2024. Notably, despite the volume of its donations, CSC does not report any fundraising costs.

Program costs and grants were $15.8m (76% of total revenue excluding donated property). The charity ended F2025 with a surplus of $4.2m (17% of total revenue).

CSC reported administrative costs of $794k (3% of revenue less investment income), bringing total overhead to 3%. This means that for every dollar received, 97 cents are available to go to the cause. This is outside of Ci’s reasonable range, which recommends that 65-95 cents go to the cause per dollar.

At the end of F2025, CSC had $11.4m in reserve funds, which could cover just under eight months of its annual program costs.

Comments & Contact

Comments added by the Charity:

Centre Street Church is a place of worship and spiritual discipleship. We appreciate the opportunity to provide context for why we believe places of worship/churches (like ours and many others) may not be achieving high grades or meeting criteria set by Charity Intelligence.

Members of our congregation give to CSC because in Christianity, as in many other religions, giving an offering to our place of worship is a part of our biblical financial stewardship. In turn, the core part of the church’s responsibility is to provide spiritual development, a gathering place for worship, biblical teaching and opportunities to serve the community. Our core focus is to provide a faith community that facilitates deeper relationships with God across all ages and life stages from children to seniors. An estimated 8-10K people call Centre Street Church home because they have been touched personally by the discipleship opportunities we provide.

Our church values transparency and accountability, regularly holding updates to our congregation and members on our finances, giving strategies and impact (locally and globally). We have also hired an organization to help us measure our impact and financial effectiveness, locally, nationally and globally. For example, through the work of the Halo Project, it is estimated that the 834 faith-based organizations in Calgary Alberta, many which are not currently measured by Charity Intelligence, with a combined annual budget of approximately$458,787,281, have a shared impact or Halo effect of $2,188,415,330 towards Calgary and the surrounding areas.   As of mid-2019, we are in the midst of an in-depth review of our specific impact in Calgary, Canada and globally.

We believe there are aspects of our mandate and faith that make it challenging to quantify or report outcomes or outputs in the same way best practices may prescribe for non-faith based non-profit organizations. Although we report many outputs in our annual reports (such as our ESL and Canadian citizenship training classes, distribution of food and community meals to marginalized communities, service to over 250 families with special needs and more) these outputs are not our central purpose as a church. Rather they are a means to a greater end. For us that greater mission is for people to discover and grow their relationship with God (Jesus). Our intention is to change hearts.

But we cannot quantify the impact of a changed heart, or a person’s kindness and how it makes a big difference to the surrounding community. Or measure the peace a person feels as they grow in their relationship with God or make amends with family and community. Additionally, we don’t use business levers to predict, compare or control those outcomes from year to year. Instead we ask the Holy Spirit to change hearts, minds and behaviours.  From a completely non-faith based perspective our role in the community can be seen as taking a proactive approach that decentralizes community service by supporting the personal and spiritual growth of individuals who then positively impact their own communities.

Finally, it is important to note that the donations we receive support external efforts outside the church. In the 2018/19 year we conservatively budgeted $1.5 million dollars for distribution to local, national, and international ministries, non-profit agencies, missionaries, church planting efforts and numerous entities around the world. Some examples of organizations to which we have donated include:

  • Samaritan’s purse
  • Mustard Seed
  • A.R.T (Humanitarian effort and church planting in Ukraine)
  • Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada
  • Calgary interfaith foodbank

Additionally, we give over $100K each year to numerous charities, for one-time events like building houses, helping workers exit the sex trade, translation projects and campaign scholarships.
