A Charity Intelligence 2025 Top Impact Charity.

Founded in 2006, Against Malaria Foundation Canada (AMFC) is a fundraising branch of Against Malaria Foundation (AMF), based in the United Kingdom. It is one of 11 sister foundations around the world. In the fiscal year ending June 2025 (F2025), Against Malaria Foundation Canada raised $2.9 million and sent $2.8 million to Against Malaria Foundation, which received a total of $192.2 million (CAD). AMFC contributed 1.5% of AMF's overall donations.

AMF reports that malaria causes between 400,000 and 625,000 deaths and between 200 million and 240 million cases of illness annually (different stats appear on different web pages), with 90% of deaths in sub-Saharan Africa and 70% among children under five. The charity uses donations to buy long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) and works with local partners to distribute them. AMF states that its internal costs for program monitoring, salaries and overhead are covered by funds designated by private donors. Public donations are used to purchase bed nets.

In F2025, Against Malaria Foundation's average cost per bed net was C$3.38. AMF Canada reports purchasing 1.1 million nets, which, at a total cost of $2.8m means the nets cost $2.59 each, 23% less than the overall cost per net for AMF.

LLINs are treated with insecticides, which makes nets 99% effective even with holes or tears. The charity reports that mosquitos are beginning to develop resistance to some insecticides used in LLINs. In response, AMF has increased the use of nets that use a combination of insecticides (pyrethroid and chlorfenapyr). A single net lasts three to four years and protects two people.

In F2025, Against Malaria Foundation Canada bought 1.1 million nets, which were distributed in Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, Nigeria, and South Sudan. These nets protected an estimated 2.0 million people.

Globally, of the 75.4 million nets purchased by AMF in F2025, AMF reported that 7.1 million had been fully distributed, protecting 12.8 million people. A further 21.4 million nets were still in the process of being distributed at year end, with the remaining nets scheduled for delivery in the following year.

Results and Impact

AMF reports that every $1m spent fighting malaria improves Africa’s GDP by $12m. It also estimates that one child death is prevented per 600 nets in use, along with 500 to 1,000 cases of malaria averted.

AMF Canada reports that its work prevented 420 deaths, averted 315,000 cases of malaria, and contributed an estimated $34.9m in economic gains in the countries where it operated. Using the charity's stat that one life is prevented per 600 nets, preventing 420 deaths would equate to 252,000 nets for the year. It is not clear why there is a discrepancy between the 1.1m nets reported by the charity and this value.

In F2025, AMF found that one day after distribution, 95% of bed nets were being used to cover sleeping spaces. Usage declined over time to 85–75% after 9 months, 80–70% after 18 months, and 65–50% after 27 months.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Against Malaria Foundation Canada's results and impact.

Charity Intelligence has rated Against Malaria Foundation Canada as High impact based on demonstrated impact per dollar.

Finances

Against Malaria Foundation Canada is not financially transparent. Ci received its financial statements through a request to the charity. The charity’s financial statements are not audited.

Against Malaria Foundation Canada received $2.9m in donations in F2025. The charity sent $2.8m to Against Malaria Foundation, which is 98% of its revenue.

AMFC does not report any fundraising or administrative costs. For every dollar donated, 100 cents are available to go to the cause. This is outside Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending, which suggests 65-95 cents per dollar.

AMF prides itself on its zero overhead allowing public donations to fund bed nets. Against Malaria Foundation is the global head office based in the UK. From Ci's discussion with AMF's management, it chooses not to spend money on audits or offices so more money can go towards bed nets. AMF Canada's directors approve the grants from Canadian donations to AMF global. Of the three Canadian directors, two are from AMF global. AMF created a bespoke internal financial management system, FinSys, that produces its financial records for its UK auditor within hours of its fiscal year end.

Against Malaria Foundation Canada has $75k in reserve funds (cash and investments), which could cover just over a week of its annual grant costs. This is within Ci’s reasonable range.

This charity report is an update that has been sent to Against Malaria Foundation Canada for review.
