OVERVIEW

About Wounded Warriors Canada:

Wounded Warriors Canada is a financially transparent 2-star charity. It has a below average results reporting grade and its overhead costs are outside Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. Ci has given this charity a Low rating for demonstrated impact.

Founded in 2007, Wounded Warriors Canada (WWC) helps people who are exposed to traumatic events at work. This includes veterans, first responders, and corrections officers. The charity also supports the families of those exposed to trauma. WWC states that most program participants reported experiencing PTSD, anxiety, or depression before entering its programs.

Wounded Warriors Canada runs two main programs: Resiliency and Recovery. Charity Intelligence estimates WWC spent $5.0m on its programs in its fiscal year ending March 2024 (F2024). Ci did not find a program spending breakdown on the charity’s website or in its audited financial statements.

The Resiliency program helps people and their families become better at dealing with trauma. The Trauma Resilience Training subprogram helps those exposed to trauma recognize and address it. The Couples Overcoming PTSI Everyday (COPE) subprogram helps couples whose relationships struggle due to trauma. COPE helps couples set goals and recognize how trauma has affected their relationship. WWC announced it completed a pilot delivery of Down-Regulation Skills Training (DRS-T) in April 2025. DRS-T includes simple interventions for during and after traumatic events.

The Recovery program helps people recover from post-trauma injuries. Trauma Resiliency Program-1 (TRP-1) helps those with trauma symptoms from work. WWC provides group counselling over three days in a residence. Trauma Resiliency Program-2 provides four days of group counselling for those who completed TRP-1. The Surviving Family Subprogram helps those who lost a family member at work or to suicide. WWC also funds training of PTSD service dogs and pairing of dogs with those in need.

Results and Impact

Nanos Research, an independent party, surveyed WWC program participants in July 2022. The results are as follows:

  • 97% of participants were satisfied with WWC programs.
  • 84% of participants found group therapy valuable.
  • 89% of participants reported that WWC programs helped reduce feelings of shame or stigma.
  • 95% of participants reported that WWC programs helped them feel supported or understood.
  • 84% of participants reported that WWC programs improved their quality of life.

Wounded Warriors Canada’s Sleep Solution subprogram offers therapy for insomnia. WWC reports that in 2023, at the start of the program, 56% of participants were using sleeping pills. At the end, 66% of those participants had reduced or stopped using sleeping pills.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not completely represent Wounded Warriors Canada’s results and impact.

Charity Intelligence has given WWC a Low impact rating based on demonstrated impact per dollar spent.

Finances

Wounded Warriors Canada’s audited financial statements follow activity-based costing, a best practice. This means its expenses are clearly defined between program, administrative, and fundraising categories.

In F2024 WWC received $3.2m in donations and special events fundraising. It also received $1.6m in program and sales revenue (34% of total revenue). Ci reported program and sales revenue under business activities.

Administrative costs are 21% of revenues (excluding investment income). Fundraising costs are 17% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 38%. For every dollar donated, 62 cents are available to go to the cause. This falls outside Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

In F2024 WWC spent $5.0m on its programs, which is 102% of its revenue. In F2024 it had a deficit of $1.7m.

Wounded Warriors Canada has $4.0m in reserve funds (cash and investments). The reserves can cover 80%, or just under ten months of program costs.

This charity report is an update that has been sent for review to Wounded Warriors Canada. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
