OVERVIEW

About Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation:

Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation is a 2-star rated charity. It is not financially transparent and has a C- results reporting grade, meaning it publicly reports little of its programs and results. Before you give, read Ci’s report.

Founded in 2005, Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation (PCFF) funds prostate cancer research. It also raises awareness of prostate cancer and the need for testing. PCFF states prostate cancer is the third leading cause of death from cancer in Canadian men. It also states that when detected late, and the cancer has spread, the five-year survival rate is 28%. The charity runs two programs: Research; and Education and Awareness. PCFF reports it spent $1.7m on its programs and grants in F2023. The most recent annual report available on PCFF's website is from F2019.

The Research program received 77% ($1.3m) of program spending. PCFF funds research to improve the quality of life for those affected by prostate cancer. In F2019 it issued 25 research grants. The charity reports on its audited financial statements that it spent $1.3m on research grants in F2023.

The Education and Awareness program received 23% ($462k) of program spending. PCFF states that when prostate cancer is detected early the survivability rate is very high. It educates the public to encourage prostate cancer testing. In F2019 the charity released television and radio PSAs, along with billboards, print and transit ads, and handouts.

Results and Impact

In 2020 PCFF reported it partially funded a project called Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR). SABR reduces the number of radiation treatments needed from 39 to five for some types of prostate cancer. 39 treatment sessions cost $7k total, while five sessions of SABR cost $2k. This saves $5k for hospitals and the health system per person.

SABR has a 99% remission rate for low-risk patients and a 93% remission rate for intermediate-risk patients.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation's results and impact.

The charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).

Finances

In F2023 Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation received $2.1m in donations and special events fundraising. Administrative costs are 8% of revenues. Fundraising costs are 16% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 24%. For every dollar donated, 76 cents are available to go to the cause. This falls within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

In F2023 PCFF spent $1.7m on its programs and grants, which is 77% of its revenue. In F2023 it had a surplus of $5k.

Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation has $3.2m in reserve funds (cash and investments). This can cover 184%, or one year and ten months of its annual program spending.

According to its T3010 filing in F2023, PCFF used external fundraisers. The charity reports it paid $329k to external fundraisers but did not report the amount it raised. The CRA requires PCFF to report the amount it raised.

In F2022 PCFF granted $233k to research. It granted $1.2m in F2023, which is a 458% increase. This led to its program cost coverage ratio decreasing from 605% in F2022 to 184% in F2023.

This charity report is an update that has been sent for review to Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
