OVERVIEW

About Rotary Foundation Canada:

Rotary Foundation Canada is a 1-star charity. It is financially transparent; however, it has a below-average results reporting grade of C- meaning it does not report well on its results. It has large funding reserves that can cover nearly nine years of program spending. Ci has rated Rotary Foundation Canada as Low on demonstrated impact per dollar spent. Before you give, read Charity Intelligence's report.

Founded in 1917, Rotary Foundation Canada’s mission is to advance goodwill and peace by improving global outcomes in health, education, and poverty. It funds aid initiatives along with Rotary International, a global service organization of more than 1.2 million members. There are more than 700 Canadian clubs registered with Rotary International. Rotary Foundation Canada receives most of its donations from these clubs.

Rotary Foundation Canada runs three core programs: global program awards ($2.9m), PolioPlus programs ($2.2m), and district program awards ($1.2m). It also spent $869k on other program awards, which was previously called packaged programs and was grouped in with global programs.

Global awards (grants) and other program grants were 52% of program costs in F2023. Rotary Foundation Canada’s global projects focus on peace and conflict prevention and resolution; disease prevention and treatment; water and sanitation; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; economic and community development; and the environment. Since 2021, Rotary Foundation Canada funded more than 90 Global grants for environmental projects including a reforesting project of 125 acres in Madagascar. It also funded a fire rescue truck for Chernihiv, Ukraine.

The PolioPlus program made up 32% of program costs in F2023. These programs send funding and volunteers for polio elimination efforts around the world. The charity does not report on its annual contributions to these efforts, but the World Health Organization states that worldwide polio cases have greatly declined since 1988.

District project grants were 16% of program costs in F2023. These include local projects led by Canadian clubs to help address needs in their communities. Rotary Foundation Canada funded a program to train Indigenous youth in water management. The program aims to encourage women to take jobs in a male-dominated field. It also aims to help improve water access in Indigenous communities by having more young Indigenous adults with water management skills. Rotary Foundation Canada did not report on the timeframe of this project.

Results and Impact

As part of the 90 Global program grants in the environmental focus area since 2021, one project was the installation of a hybrid solar/diesel power generator for a Haitian school that saves around $4,000 USD per year in fuel costs and reduces air and noise pollution.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Rotary Foundation Canada’s results and impact.

Charity Intelligence has given Rotary Foundation Canada a Low results reporting grade for demonstrated impact per dollar spent.
