OVERVIEW

About Fondation CHU de Québec:

Fondation du CHU de Québec is a 1-star charity. The charity has a C Results Reporting grade. The charity is not financially transparent. Its overhead spending is 22%, within Ci’s reasonable range. Its reserve funds can cover 12 years of annual grant costs, outside Ci’s reasonable limit of three years.

Founded in 1984, Fondation du CHU de Québec (CHUQ) raises money for equipment, research, improvements in patient care, and professional training at the CHU de Québec healthcare network. CHU de Québec includes five hospitals which collectively serve a population of almost 2 million people: Centre Hospitalier de l’Université Laval, l’Hôpital de l’Enfant-Jesus, l’Hôpital du Saint-Sacrement, l’Hôpital Saint-Francois d’Assise, and l’Hôtel-Dieu de Québec. At the time of this update, the F2025 annual report is posted on the website; however, the most recent available audited financial statements are from F2023.

Based on the financial breakdown in the F2025 annual report, 55% of grant spending was allocated to Equipment, 31% to Research, 9% to Training, and 5% to Patient Care. As of F2024, the charity financed 263 projects, with 230 projects receiving approval during the year. Under its training program, CHUQ funded 56 grants and gave out nine clinical research grants in F2025. CHUQ converted two consultation rooms into minor surgery rooms at the Centre des Maladies du Sein (CMS) to minimize overcrowding and appointment rescheduling in F2025. The charity’s funding also led to the installation of a cyclotron, a 17-ton particle accelerator used for diagnosis and treatment, at Peirre-Péladeau Integrated Cancer Centre in F2025.

Finances

Fondation du CHU de Québec’s audited financial statements follow line-item costing, which is not a best practice.

In F2023, CHUQ received $18.1m in donations and special events revenue. Administrative costs are 17% of revenue (less investment income) and fundraising costs are 6% of donations. This results in overhead spending of 22%. For every dollar donated, 78 cents are available to go towards the cause, within Ci’s reasonable range.

CHUQ has $112m in funding reserves, which can cover 1,201% or twelve years of annual grant spending. This is outside Ci’s reasonable limit of three years.
