Ottawa Hospital Foundation is a 3-star charity. The charity has an A- Results Reporting grade, which is above average. Its overhead spending is 21%, within Ci’s reasonable range, and its reserve funds can cover over nineteen years of annual grant costs. This is outside Ci’s reasonable range.

Founded in 1999, Ottawa Hospital Foundation (OHF) raises funds to support the Ottawa Hospital. OHF reports that the Ottawa Hospital serves more than two million people from across Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec, to as far as Nunavut.  

In F2025, Ottawa Hospital Foundation granted $14.3m. Its grants primarily went to the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, the Ottawa Hospital, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, and the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine.

Research received 50% of annual grants. In F2025, the foundation reported that 22 scientific papers were published with 752 active clinical trials and 58 research labs. It reported that there were 2,333 researchers, 61 active patient families, and 11,086 patients enrolled in clinical trials in F2025.

Patient Care and Education received 37% of annual grants. OHF reported that the hospital had 178,286 emergency visits, 979,998 ambulatory care visits, and 67,466 surgical cases in F2025. It also stated that the Ottawa Hospital delivered 7,166 babies and had 1,356 medical students.

Equipment, Tech, and Innovation received 11% of annual grants. In F2025, OHF reported that the Ottawa Hospital received one MR-Linac machine.  

The remaining 2% of annual grants went towards the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. OHF states that donations to the Heart Institute are typically made to Heart Institute’s foundation.

In F2022, Ottawa Hospital Foundation launched its Campaign to Create Tomorrow, a $500 million fundraising campaign to build a new hospital campus on Carling Avenue. As of August 2025, the foundation has raised $356m, which is 71% of its goal. The new site will replace Ottawa Civic Hospital. OHF reports that the new campus will create over 4,000 jobs during its construction and will have 6,000 employees. It is projected to have 641 additional rooms and is expected to have double the number of dialysis stations. The foundation reports that the new campus will add $2B to Ottawa’s economy during its construction. The campus is projected to be finished in 2029. As of August 2025, the charity has nearly completed the parking garage and has started the groundwork for the main hospital building.

Administrative costs are 2% of revenues (less investment income) and fundraising costs are 19% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 21%. For every dollar donated to the foundation, 79 cents are available to go to the cause, within Ci’s reasonable range.

OHF has $283m in reserve funds, which can cover annual grant costs for over 19 years. This is outside Ci’s reasonable limit of three years or less.

In F2025, OHF had an estimated investment return of 8%. Its investment returns have averaged 8% over the last five years.
