OVERVIEW
About McGill University Health Centre Foundation:
McGill University Health Centre Foundation is a 4-star charity. It has below-average disclosure with a B- results reporting grade. Its overhead spending and reserve funds are both within Ci’s reasonable range.
McGill University Health Centre Foundation (MUHC Foundation) was founded in 1999. It raises funds for research, patient care, hospital redevelopment, and equipment at McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). MUHC is one of the largest bilingual academic health networks in North America and Quebec's leading research hospital. It serves 1.9 million people across 63% of Quebec's territory. In 2018, MUHC Foundation merged with Royal Victoria Hospital Foundation. In 2021, it merged with the Montreal Chest Institute Foundation. In 2022, it joined with the Lachine Hospital Foundation to raise funds for Lachine Hospital's redevelopment.
MUHC Foundation runs four programs: Research, Patient Care, Hospital Redevelopment, and Equipment and Medical and Lab Supplies. All program spending takes the form of grants to MUHC. In F2025, MUHC Foundation granted $34.1m to MUHC across 150 projects.
Research was the largest program in F2025. It accounted for $18.8m or 55% of grants. The Foundation grants money to the Research Institute at McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC). In F2025, RI-MUHC reports that researchers produced over 2,553 peer-reviewed publications and delivered over 2,500 scientific talks across 85 countries. In F2025, MUHC Foundation supported 66 projects. Major projects included DOvEEgene and the SDR project. DOvEEgene is a genomic test that detects ovarian and endometrial cancer as early as Stage I. It enrolled more than 5,000 women. The SDR Project identifies patients with rare and undiagnosed genetic diseases. In F2025, it identified at least six patients with a newly recognized rare genetic syndrome.
Patient Care accounted for $7.8m or 23% of grants. The Foundation grants money to improve patient experience and outcomes at MUHC. The Foundation supported 76 projects in F2025. Major projects included the Women's Healthy Heart Initiative, a program that advances cardiovascular screening and prevention for women at elevated risk.
Hospital Redevelopment accounted for $4.4m or 13% of grants. The Foundation funds equipment, research facilities, and patient spaces at the Glen site. The Glen site consolidates the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal Children's Hospital, Montreal Chest Institute, and RI-MUHC into a single campus. In F2025, the Foundation made its final payment toward this pledge.
Equipment Medical and Lab Supplies accounted for $3.3m or 10% of grants. The Foundation purchases equipment for MUHC’s clinical and research teams. The Foundation supported 7 projects in F2025. Major projects included the SimMan 3G PLUS, a patient simulator used to train health care professionals in emergency and critical care.

Results and Impact
DOvEEgene detects ovarian and endometrial cancer at Stage I. Standard tests typically catch these cancers at Stage III or IV. The test showed about 70% accuracy in early detection and identified more than 85 cancers.
The SDR Project identifies patients with rare and undiagnosed genetic diseases. It solved the case of a patient misdiagnosed with lymphoma for years and a young woman with recurring severe infections. It also identified the genetic cause of recurring lymphoma in a patient after more than a decade without a diagnosis.
The Women's Healthy Heart Initiative helped more than 1,000 women understand and reduce their risk of heart disease.
