Finances
Food for the Hungry Canada’s audited financial statements follow activity-based costing, a best practice. Its expenses are clearly defined between program, administrative, and fundraising categories.
FHC reported its program costs split as international programs and Canadian programs in its F2023 audited financial statements. Its F2024 statements do not provide this division. As such, Ci reported program costs under international programs and public education and awareness under Canadian program costs in in F2024.
In F2024, FHC received $9.6m in donations. It also received donated goods valued at $3.4m.
Administrative costs are 11% of revenues (excluding investment income). Fundraising costs are 16% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 27%. For every dollar donated, 73 cents are available to go to the cause. This falls within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.
In F2024 FHC spent $6.9m on its programs, which is 71% of its revenue excluding donated goods. In F2024 it had a deficit of $40k.
Food for the Hungry Canada has $1.2m in reserve funds (cash and investments). The reserves can cover 18%, or two months of program costs.
In F2024, FHC paid external fundraisers $337k who collected $1.8m in donations. This means it cost FHC 19 cents to raise $1 using external fundraisers. It is likely more cost efficient to directly donate to the charity.
