Founded in 1976, Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) offers festivals, screenings, lectures, workshops, professional development, and opportunities to meet filmmakers. TIFF’s mission is to transform the way people see the world through film. The charity spent $32.7m on its programs in 2023, and it did not break down spending by program.

At the time of this update, the most recent audited financial statements available are for 2023, and the charity's most recent annual report is from 2022. The charity runs two festivals each year. The Toronto International Film Festival is the larger of the two, and it featured 193 films, 50 shorts, and seven series in 2022. TIFF Next Wave focuses on engaging younger audiences. It ran for three days and featured four films, 11 short films, and workshops tailored for young creators. The total attendance for TIFF Next Wave was 1,907 people.

TIFF Lightbox is a movie theatre located in downtown Toronto. It showed 293 films in 2022. In addition to movie screenings, the theatre also puts on special events such as guest talks and workshops. In 2022, TIFF Lightbox held 155 events with 30,685 participants.

The charity runs a talent development program, which consists of mentorship programs, guest speakers, and workshops. TIFF held 98 talent development events in 2022 for over 4,400 participants.

TIFF partnered with 50 other organizations to provide opportunities for people of all ages to enjoy films. Its partners distributed 1,947 tickets in 2022.

Toronto International Film Festival is not financially transparent. Ci had to obtain its audited financial statements from the CRA. The charity’s audited financial statements do not break down expenses in any material way, so Ci had to use its T3010 filings to report program, administration, and fundraising costs.

TIFF received $17.3m in donations in 2023, which is 42% of revenue. It received $15.3m in fees for service, and $554k in investment income. The charity received $4.5m in government funding, which is a $10.3m decrease from 2022.

TIFF spent $32.7m on its programs, which is 71% of revenue. It ran a deficit of $5.1m, meaning it drew on its reserves to fund its programs. The charity spent $4.8m on fundraising, which is 28% of donations, and $7.8m on administration, which is 19% of revenue. For every dollar donated to the charity, 53 cents are available to go to the cause. This is outside of Ci’s reasonable range.

TIFF has $12.0m in its reserves (cash and investments) and has $20.1m worth of interest-bearing debt, leading to a negative program cost coverage ratio.

TIFF has a library of donated films which is valued on the balance sheet at $1. The insured value of the collection is $22.7m.
