Founded in 1978, United Way Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo (UWFM) grants funds to local charities to improve lives and build a stronger community in Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo. The charity gives grants through three programs: Healthy People Strong Communities, From Poverty to Possibility, and All That Kids Can Be. It runs its own programs: Redpoll, Period Promise, and Tools for School. UWFM spent $3.3m on its programs and grants in 2024.

From Poverty to Possibility received 21% ($702k) of program spending in 2024. It granted to three charities and the largest two were The Salvation Army, and Centre of Hope. The Salvation Army received $300k. It provided 14,483 bagged lunches and sheltered 5,151 individuals. Centre of Hope received $271k. It provided 7,143 showers to clients and provided services to 1,826 unique individuals.
All That Kids Can Be received 12% ($401k) of program spending in 2024. It granted to six charities and the largest two grantees were The HUB Family Resource Centre and The Children’s Centre. The HUB Family Resource Centre received $163k. It supported 4,054 unique individuals. The Children’s Centre received $163k. It served 288 preschool meals and gave out 429 grocery gift cards.
Redpoll received 13% ($434k) of program spending. United Way Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo runs this program. It subleases office space for nine non-profit tenants.
Period Promise and Tools for School received $11k in program spending. Period Promise provides free menstrual products. Tools for School distributes essential school materials.

Wood Buffalo Wellness Society, one of UWFM’s grantees, reported an 87% decrease in police interactions, a 95% decrease in emergency room visits, and a decrease in ambulance rides after people took part in their programs.
Pastew Place Detox Centre Society reported a 91% success rate in transitioning individuals from pre-treatment to the next stage.
